Re: 3 England subs from Burnley
So what you really meant to say was 1 England sub currently playing for Burnley, two others who played for us in the past also came on.
Strange thread title.

Re: 3 England subs from Burnley
The op was expressing pride that current or former Burnley players are playing for England... something that Burnley fans find a great source of joy. Us older fans are even somewhat amazed by it. Football fans everywhere will associate with that sense of pride ..Not surprisingly the usual pedants are along immediately to try and spoil things...

Not once have I denied the scope of achievement, what I don't like and can't understand how others tolerate it is thread titles which are misleading or completely inaccurate.randomclaret2 wrote:The op was expressing pride that current or former Burnley players are playing for England... something that Burnley fans find a great source of joy. Very good to see him given his debut also to see his flawless kicking, one poor throw out aside I thought it was an excellent assured performance and must have given him and all even more confidence of his all round ability.

Re: ARTICLE: Nick Pope in the middle of England’s goal
england's downfall this summer will be southgate's ridiculous decision to choose his order of goalkeepers in reverse order of quality.
pickford is crap, butland is better but prone to errors, pope is neither.
lessons should have been learned from liverpool's recent champions league debacle. having a crap keeper gets you knocked out.

Re: 3 England subs from Burnley
I must apologise wholeheartedly for the error of my ways. I was just pointing out that three of the subs were our lads, ie 'from Burnley' at one time or another. For them all to come on at the same time looked great to me! 'From Burnley' seemed a good way to shorten the thread title that 'that have played for Burnley FC at some point in time' but I'm obviously a criminal in the way I misused my words.
If the time has come when people criticise thread titles it feels like time to give up bothering to write anything.
For goodness sake, lighten up!

I think England would settle for being runners-up in the World Cup like Liverpool in the Champions League.quoonbeatz wrote:england's downfall this summer will be southgate's ridiculous decision to choose his order of goalkeepers in reverse order of quality.

Yes possibly the fellow had switched off but I think with experience Nick would have held on to the ball longer.

same here but that wasn't my point. it was that, in the end, having a **** keeper will cost you.Tall Paul wrote:I think England would settle for being runners-up in the World Cup like Liverpool in the Champions League.
liverpool had a great chance to win the champions league until he chucked two (arguably three) in.

Go on then - its a quite news day on the board. Lets here the argument for the Bale wonder goal being described as "chucked in" !!

You could tell he has been working on his distribution looked like he had made a big improvement

it wasn't chucked in but he could have made a better attempt at saving it. he gives up halfway through his dive.TVC15 wrote:"arguably three" ?

not saying he would have saved it (especially going on the rest of his performance) but it was hit fairly centrally and not particularly out of reach.
none of which takes any credit away from bale, obviously.

gotta say, he didn't look good playing it out from the back to defenders. either that or the defenders were static..... it certainly wasn't city-esqueBuxtonclaret wrote:Just been sent this by my cousin.

on a serious note, pope's got the safest hands of any goalkeeper i've seen in a while, including heaton.
the way he simply catches some really powerful shots is very impressive.

my last property in the UK was in the mill in Summerseat. I've just been staying in an airbnb in Holcombe and discovered the old pub/restaurant had completely collapsed into the river, and that my old apartment would have been flooded during your big rains some time ago......Foulthrow wrote:Did they own that pub that used to be frequented by members of the squad?

Re: ARTICLE: Nick Pope in the middle of England’s goal
Well done Nick Pope, an overdue but confident debut, many congratulations to him.
That near post shot would have seen Pickford theatrically pushing it around the post before leaping back up like he'd been stung by a wasp. I may be a little bias though

The awful throw out at 1 minute and 16 seconds that put Delph in an awful position is probably what Southgates worries about around his distribution.quoonbeatz wrote:1 minute and 52 seconds that proves he's better than pickford.
Could have easily led to a Costa Rica goal and had Pickford or Butland done that there would be endless posts about it on here

You mean the one that is straight to Delph's feet but he mis-controls putting himself in danger?Devils_Advocate wrote:The awful throw out at 1 minute and 16 seconds that put Delph in an awful position is probably what Southgates worries about around his distribution.

Re: ARTICLE: Nick Pope in the middle of England’s goal
No the one where he throws it too softly to a player facing his own goal on the edge of his own box with an attacker able to get right up his backside and with no cover.martin_p wrote:You mean the one that is straight to Delph's feet but he mis-controls putting himself in danger?
People can spin it how they want but it put Delph under real pressure in a dangerous situation and had Pickford thrown that ball out to Tarks in the exact same scenario than the reaction on here would have been to completely blame the keeper.
I get people are chuffed to bits about Pope and want to celebrate the achievement but I cant help view things a bit more objectively and add some balance no matter how much it irks people on here

He doesn't look natural on the ball whatsoever.

Re: ARTICLE: Nick Pope in the middle of England’s goal
i don't think anyone would claim he's the best with his feet but that isn't what matters when you're a goalkeeper.UpTheBeehole wrote:He doesn't look natural on the ball whatsoever.
england aren't manchester city who need a sweeper rather than a keeper (although ederson is a top keeper besides his passing range)
i terms of actual goalkeeping, pope is the best of the three. he saves a higher percentage of shots and makes less mistakes, he commands his area better and is better on crosses.
burnley's defence is so good because the defenders' priority is defending. that's how you build a good team - choose the best players for each position by who gets the basics right with the most consistency.
pope > butland > pickford. its bizarre that southgate is going with pickford as his first choice.

Re: ARTICLE: Nick Pope in the middle of England’s goal
Do my fellow Clarets remember the story about Nick at Deepdale? Pre-season friendly and one of our lads hit a rocket into the crowd when shooting in. It happened to be our end. The ball hit a little girl in the face. A UTC member was sat near the poor girl and told us how well Nick reacted. If I recall rightly the girl's Mum posted on the thread saying how concerned Nick was. I think Nick asked the lass who her favourite Claret was (Andre Gray I think) and he saw her at the end of the match and gave her AG's shirt signed by him.
That said a lot about him as a lad. We didn't know too much about him as a player then. But we do now.
It's great to see a good sound lad fulfil a dream and play for England.

Pickford will look brilliant playing the ball with his feet through the centre to the half way line.
Unfortunately it just may be after he has retrieved it from the net though.

Courtois isn't great on the ball but Belgium play the best goalkeeper and lace fannying about to others! His height is an advantage - just like Pope.
