Re: New Speed Camera vans
Right, I've had a Google gander and I can't see anything about the 10 per cent tolerance not being implemented by the police. I also don't think this will happen. Our police rely on the goodwill of the public. Criminalising drivers for going one or two mph over the limit, just because they haven't got their faces glued to their speedometers, would be counterproductive.
Re: New Speed Camera vans
My recent speed awareness course made it clear that different forces have different policies towards tolerance. As for the "money making racket" posts .....just don't speed.Pimlico_Claret wrote:Two people where I work been fined in the last fortnight for doing 32 in a 30 zone. Well they would say that, wouldn't they. I've looked and I can't find a single English constabulary that doesn't implement the tolerance. I'm willing to be proved wrong, though. But like I said, I can't find any.keith1879 wrote:My recent speed awareness course made it clear that different forces have different policies toward tolerance.
As for Manchester city centre bus lanes. Some years ago they had a referendum regarding congestion charges and the public voted no. The buss lanes have effectively made parts of the city centre, especially Oxford Road, car free. If you don't know where you are going you run the possibility of being 'trapped' by one.

Which constabulary was it? If you don't know - whereabouts were they? I'd love to know because Google news searches aren't throwing up anything about the tolerance limit not being applied.Pimlico_Claret wrote:It does, why would I post otherwise, both of them, 32.!

Lancashire. Maybe the tolerance has ended with the roll out of the new vans.Billy Balfour wrote:Which constabulary was it? If you don't know - whereabouts were they? I'd love to know because Google news searches aren't throwing up anything about the tolerance limit not being applied.

I agree. But I also feel that everyone driving round with their faces glued to their speedometers is a risk too. This is why there's a 10% tolerance.tim_noone wrote:Speed kills. There's some right cocks on the road wanting to gain one car length.why?

Maybe you can contact the police on my colleagues behalf to have their fines quashed as they have obviously been issued in error.Billy Balfour wrote:I agree. But I also feel that everyone driving round with their faces glued to their speedometers is a risk too. This is why there's a 10% tolerance.

I wasn't, but you seem to be fixed in your opinion. The reason I know these cases are true is that they were both incredulous that this could happen. So as I said, maybe the new vans have a new policy, they need to be paid for after all.Billy Balfour wrote:Blimey. No need for you to turn fatuous. We were having a civil conversation. Oh well...
Pity there wasn't a van to catch the idiot who drove the wrong way round the Highmoor park roundabout in Clitheroe today at speed, bypassing two cars and forcing me to pull onto the pavement, whilst giving me the finger for beeping my horn at him. They're the dangerous drivers.

Re: New Speed Camera vans
I got caught last year by a mobile camera.
Lancs Constabulary start prosecuting in a 30mph zone at 36. This is stated on the letter I got.
Unless it's changed since then, but it's still on their website as such.

Fair enough, but maybe I'm fixed in my opinion on this because I can't find anything anywhere that says the tolerances have been abolished. I'll show you what I did find though - on the Lancsshire police website.Pimlico_Claret wrote:I wasn't, but you seem to be fixed in your opinion. I saw that new style van close to the George IV last week and did think it was rather sneaky trying to disguise it as more of a tradesman's type of van.MarkGreen wrote:I got caught from one on Padiham road overtaking as it goes to two lanes just after George the fourth with the car wash on your left.
My own mistake so not blaming anyone, but I think where it opens up the limit should change to 40 and then go back to 30 as it goes back into a single lane.
I also agree about that section of road. It's very badly designed imo as a dual carriageway naturally encourages people to speed up and overtake, but actually if you do you're speeding. 40 on that section would make sense really.
And I've just paid £30 (£60 if I didn't pay in 14 days) for inadvertently spending about 5/6 seconds in a bus lane in Manchester and the photo shows not a single other car or bus on the road! As DSR says, just money grabbing.

Re: New Speed Camera vans
The "speed kills" attitude is a pretty dangerous one to go by. If you hold, as the police do, that driving at any speed over the limit is equally dangerous regardless of road conditions - ie. 35 mph past a school at 8.50 am on a wet day is just as serious an offence as driving at 35 mph on an empty dual carriageway on a clear dry day - then you are creating a culture where the converse will be believed. Namely, that 30 mph past a school at 8.50 am on a wet day is just as safe as driving at 30 mph on an empty dual carriageway on a clear dry day. The second statement is obviously nonsense; so why do they persist with the first?tim_noone wrote:Speed kills. There's some right cocks on the road wanting to gain one car length.why?
Speed cameras are designed to trap people that speed accidentally, either by slipping a mile or two over the limit, or by missing the sign changing the speed limit. The more serious offenders are the deliberate speeders who have all the gizmos warning them of speed traps; the law is set up for them, because they can and do speed on 99% of the roads and they don't get caught. The police ought to change their focus to have properly disguised speed traps in places where speeding is genuinely dangerous, and catch the true menaces.

I got stung twice in 2 weeks i the same box junction in london. Committed the second 'offence' before the first letter arrived.Dark Cloud wrote:I saw that new style van close to the George IV last week and did think it was rather sneaky trying to disguise it as more of a tradesman's type of van.

Said box junction was faintly painted on the brow of a hill that you could only see when you were in it. By which point it was too late.
Apparently TFL or the council (cant recall which - TFL have a zero tolerance policy for being a minute late on the congestion charge and have tightened the timeframe to pay) apparently made over 12m from it. 12m from that one junction.

Spot on, couldn't agree more with your whole post.dsr wrote: The police ought to change their focus to have properly disguised speed traps in places where speeding is genuinely dangerous, and catch the true menaces.
It's like driving down an empty motorway at 4 or 5 am - doing 100mph is absolutely fine but the eye of the law it's 'speeding'
I understand why having universal laws makes things easier - i.e. less grey areas but surely some context has to come into these sorts of offences.

Re: New Speed Camera vans
The laws are there for a reason.
"Sense" or not, I see a lot of **** every day... should we just let people make their own minds up about what is legal or not or just stick to a standard?
As for those crying about speeding, do they realise that "EVEN WHERE THERE IS HARDLY ANY TRAFFIC" there may be people pulling out of side junctions, driveways etc.
Infact, the most whinging seems to come from those in 30-40MPH zones, which are FAR more dangerous than 50-60-70mph zones for speeding.
In a 30 as far as I'm concerned, you are being absolutely senseless and are bang to rights. The fines for SP30 should be much higher than SP50's.

Re: New Speed Camera vans
You have missed the entire point of the thread. No-one has said that driving at 31 mph isn't illegal, this whole thing is about whether the punishment fits the crime, and saying that some speeding offences are more serious than others.starting_11 wrote:The laws are there for a reason.

So why disagree with what has been said is wrong, and then say that some speeding offences are more serious than others?

Proabably because one is in built up areas with a serious threat to life whilst another is just a threat to other motorists.
You're right though, they should be both dealt with more harshly.
If you speed, you know what you're doing or if you don't you should be punished for not being capable of controlling your vehicle.

Or not, because they do not enforce until 36mph in a 30mph zone. Not a mile or two over the limit, six miles over the limit.dsr wrote:Speed cameras are designed to trap people that speed accidentally, either by slipping a mile or two over the limit
