True, which is stupid enough already. But this is FIFA's fault. Not the fault of the teams involved. If FIFA don't want teams carving up their final matches to gain favourable knockout fixtures then they're the ones who can do something about it. We can't be blaming the players for trying to make it easier for themselves to win the competition.

Who's blaming the players?

To be fair, there's not a great deal they can do with groups of four and two teams going through and it's not that often that we've had these situations in tournaments.

I didn't say anyone was blaming the players. I was just making my point.

Doesn't saying "we can't be blaming the players" at least imply that someone might be blaming the players?

If not what's the point in saying it?

Just look at the Japan game. Weren't even vaguely interested in attacking in the latter half of the game in case they picked up a booking. Complete farce

They took a massive gamble though and were praying that the other game went in their favour. One goal in the wrong net and they would have rued all the time they wasted.

But sometimes the gambler comes out on top...

It wasn't that big a gamble. They had to consider the possibilities.

Possibility #1: Everything stays as it is and they go through.
#2: They score and they go through
#3 they concede and they go out on GD

Those are the only things they had any effect on. If Japan pressed for a goal and then conceded then it would be Senegal playing keep-ball and just doing everything not to concede again. As far as i'm concerned Japan did the right thing to maximise the probability of them going through once Senegal had conceded.

Yes it is a bit farcical, but that's because FIFA allowed for such a farcical situation to be beneficial to a team.

Tonight's game and situation was far more farcical than the Japan one.

Next up at 3pm France v Argentina BBC1

Like to see France win for no other reason that I’m not fond of Argentina.

Well Uruguay are solid all over the pitch where as the Portuguese are more of a one man team so I wouldn’t like to back either in this one.

Uruguay to win 2-1, and Ronaldo to miss a sitter right at the death.

We'll have to meet a top (first) team eventually, if we're to win the thing.

Uruguay. It’s just like watching Burnley. Defend from the front, every player giving his all for the team. If you like a defensive masterclass this is for you.

could do with less poncing around by Suarez though.

Alas, if Uraguay get to the final it'll mean England have very little chance of winning the World cup due to the sheer gulf in class!
