Match review

Post by piston broke » Fri Jul 13, 2018 9:50 pm

On a perfect Summer evening for football Burnley kicked off pre-season at Cork City.
First Half.
Heaton
Bardsley...Long...Mee...Ward
McNiell...O’Neill..Cork...Lennon
Wood...Wells
They played the first half as though they were going to play a second. Very steady with nothing to get you out of your seat, the government will be pleased to hear.
No names as it was what it was, a first run out after a tough weeks training but a couple looked poor. Kevin Long looked imperious at the back and was clearly the best player out there.
Second half.
Lingaard
O’Neill...Tarkowski...Dunne...Taylor
Walters...Westwood...Hendrick...Agyei
Vokes...Barnes
Only O’Neill stayed on for the second half with no Matt Lowton on show?
These guys played the second half like they’d had a first. Far more energy and pace all around the pitch. It took a Jimmy Dunne strike, from 10yds, to seperate the sides following a corner and a flick on.
Ashley Westwood ran the show and should have capped his performance with a goal but with the last touch of the match he shot wide of a keeperless net from 20yds.
Only sour note being the substitution of Ash Barnes and the physio handing him the ice. Hopefully a safety precaution. McNeill came back on for Ash.
Thanks to Cork City for putting out a team as they are between CL qualifiers and their thoughts must be on Legia Warsaw. Good luck to them.

Just back myself. That's a fair summary PB for what was basically a glorified training match. Long and Westwood definitely the stand out men in each half. Cork also showed his class in glimpses in first half. Also think Walters, Tarky and O'Neill (as an overlapping fullback) deserve a mention for the much better, and certainly more intense second half showing.

Much more important games to come obviously but great to see proper footy back!

The most important aspect to these games is getting fine tuned and match fit,and crucially avoiding serious injuries, hope it's not bad news for Ash.

According to the official site Barnes was taken off due to him having bad blisters on his feet, nothing a proper fitting pair of boots won't fix.

Just watched the two interviews with Jimmy Dunne on Clarets Player. How grounded is that lad?! What a credit he is to the club.
