Cross pool , nonsense. If we had sign four, five or even six new players to help our European campaign I might agree. Get out of Europe as soon as possible and stay in the PL.

Bloody hell, a good first half, undone in a five minute spell at the start of the second half and we are now apparently desperate to be knocked out of a cup competition. Far from realistic in my view.claretnproud wrote:many will have lived the dream and seen us play in europe. You say far from realistic. I know you are a Hendrick fan in this role. When are you going to say it's not working?

Agree, Brady and Defiour, we haven't played good atacking football since. Still I'm sure we'll be okay with one up front.

We've not even made the actual competition yet, still in the qualifying phase. Not much of an achievement really if we fail to beat Olympiacos.

Re: I hope olympiacos is our last euro tie this season
51 years since we played in Europe and the armchair brigade want us knocked out already. It's cost the true fans a small fortune to support us in these games, get off your arse, stop whinging and join us in Greece on Thursday. But you are not prepared to do that, you will just slag us off when we are in the bottom 3 in the prem. PLASTIC supporters.

To be fair, I'd play the best side against the Greeks, and then, let the lads have some fun, just rotate the squad in the groups. Considering 2 more PL games are potentially "sacrificed", we still have 34 more to go, which is more than enough to get us going.

Re: I hope olympiacos is our last euro tie this season
Normally the first home game of the season is met with great excitement and anticipation. I didn't get that yesterday. Was it because we've already had 2 previous home competitive games? Was it the kick off time? had we not been in Europe we would have kicked off at the traditional 3pm the previous day. Some supporters in the ground yesterday were probably thinking ahead, I think some of the players in all fairness were, it's human nature. Whilst I want Burnley to respect and win every game, our main priority is the PL. Last season I used to feel added confidence if we played a team the weekend after the'd competed in Europe. At present I feel the opposite. To me its a distraction to far at this stage in our development and I hope it doesn't come back to haunt us.

Some of our fans are so dramatic. We’ve lost one game in our first 6 competitive games of the season!
The fixture pile up you think we have now won’t continue even if we progress. Instead of 6 extra fixtures in a month it’s 6 extra fixtures over 3 months.
I imagine we’ll play a very youthful side in the League Cup competition.
Yesterday was just a bad day at the office.

In the cold light of day I cant agree with the op.Ben Mee and Wardy had the worst games ever for us.
Hopefully it taught Sean the need for abandoning the nonsense of passing across the back and slow build up.Also why play with one up front.Away its slightly more acceptable but never at home.
We have lost a game in our mini league of 12 clubs but we will bounce back.Youth needs to come in to our team not just rotating of the same 16.
I want a Euro run if only to shut up the idiots in the press who after one game are already predicting the worst
We will get better UTC

Thing is, one poster (possibly two) have said that we need to put out a weakened side and that he hopes we go out.
That then is used as justification to go on little soap boxes about how ace it would be if we won the bloody thing and it wouldn't matter if we got relegated if we did.
Both extreme views are completely mental and we take each game as it comes as always.

On the contrary, I've been at every competitive game bar Istanbul away. I don't need to wait until December thanks, perhaps we could meet up over a pint in Athens and maybe then you might appreciate what competing in Europe means to fans of my generation who have followed the team through its darkest days.claretnproud wrote:you seem a bit wierd pimlico. perhaps you will come back on in 3 months and be as flippant about what could become a very difficult season. its almost as if you havnt seen a game this season. bed time. will speak again in december or so and see if you are as cocky about your silly and quite frankly naive views then.
Of course I'm not wanting anything to jeopardize our Premier League position, but some people need to get a grip, we are two games into 38, and are 2 points off what we had last season at this stage. We hardly need to panic.

Re: I hope olympiacos is our last euro tie this season
Oh how ambitious, let's throw away Europe for PL mediocrity. Besides have you not noticed that only 3 players who started against the Turks started against Watford, and do you not think that highly paid professional footballers who have access to state of the art training facilities and dietary advice shouldn't be asked to play two games of football a week? We have lost every initial home league game since we returned to the PL so this is a good omen. Stop whining and get behind the lads in Europe. I'd sooner win the damn thing and get relegated, at least it's a potentially winnable trophy, at least far more possible than the PL. The lack of ambition and the acceptance of 'anything to stay in the PL' attitude by many really gets up my nose. I wish I could get upwards of 50k a week to play two games of football. Or are you one of the 'fans' who thinks there is a trophy for earning money and coming 7th in the PL? I want us to win things or die trying, not just to sit there thinking 'oh everything's okay cos we are in the PL'. Think of all the most important and exciting times there have been at the Turf, Europe, promotion, cup runs, even the Orient game if you remember it, even the battle of Turf Moor against Celtic, even our last championship back in 60 (which I can just remember), none of these had anything to do with mid-table mediocrity and 'survival'. Too many Clarets are now so obsessed with the PL money-go-round that they have lost sight of what football is (or should be) about. It's a game in which you take risks in order to actually try to win something. If all you want is to see the club's bank balance grow try having a look at your bank balance then compare it with that of Burnley FC and ask yourself what you actually want from being a football fan.claretnproud wrote:many will have lived the dream and seen us play in europe. Re: I hope olympiacos is our last euro tie this season
Why has my post been twisted by so many readers. It seems a few understand my views but not all. Once the next couple of weeks are over we will have had a nice european trip and a decent home game. If we go further than olympiacos then many many fans will not be able to afford the away trips. In my opinion we arent strong enough to progress a long way in this competition so lets give a good account and losing the tie could be the best result for the club we all love. I want the best for our club and of course support them wholeheartedly home and away but bigger and stronger squads than us have had real problems in this competition so why do some fans think its such big thing. By nature I am an idealist but in this case we need to be realistic and if there is a 10 percent chance that this competition could put our premiership place in doubt then I want out. Its that simple. I would be amazed if Dyche doesnt feel the same way. No, of course he wont say it but he can think it.ClaretTony wrote:Bloody hell, a good first half, undone in a five minute spell at the start of the second half and we are now apparently desperate to be knocked out of a cup competition. Plenty of people, not just fans but managers too, say that if you have a Cup run you are likely to be relegated. Where's the evidence? Does our form in 2008-09 not suggest that the opposite may be true?
Plenty of people also say that if we have to play 23 matches in 17 weeks we are likely to be relegated, because our form will be significantly worse than if we played only 17 in 17 weeks. Again, where's the evidence? Has anyone produces stats about what is the optimum number of matches you should play for best results?

It was a while ago, but Leeds didn't, were over paying and were paying a proportion of the players wages when they signed for a new club to encourage them to leave.
Bit like City paying Hart a chunk of money to leave.
Leeds also swan dived into league 1 pretty much.

Why? Exactly why must we maintain our PL status at any cost? If you could explain without using the terms 'income' and 'money' it would be helpful. Oh and don't bother with the 'we are watching top class players every week', if they don't play for us I don't care.claretnproud wrote:we have injured players and will gain more injuries through euro competition. Re: I hope olympiacos is our last euro tie this season
Another 'fan' completely lacking in any ambition. Why should we give so much priority to the PL, because we might win it? Good luck with that one.ashtonlongsider wrote:Normally the first home game of the season is met with great excitement and anticipation.

No mate, it's just fear and the desire to moan. I'm getting boring here but other than possible injuries, that can happen in ANY game, why do people think that players playing two games of footie a week are going to get tired and sh-gg-d out. They are highly paid, well trained and expertly fed professionals, if they find it too difficult maybe they should go work in a factory for 35 hours a week and get paid a tiny fraction per week what they currently get in an hour.scouseclaret wrote:And Fulham managed to finish 12th in the Prem that season, as did Swansea when they reached the knockout stage a few years later. I’d consider either of those outcomes to be a successful season.
It’s become accepted wisdom that the Europa League adversely affects league form, but is there any actual evidence of this???

Perhaps you could show some evidence for that scenario?deanothedino wrote:You say that now but what would you say if we imploded like Leeds?
