Excellent piece. Also very jealous that Dave made the 1962 final. I had a ticket but couldn’t make it.

I also remember that original article really well, with little Billy Nesbitt sat on the train in his suit, waistcoat and watch chain being so proud to show off his FA Cup winners medal from 1914 to Dave and his mate.

I had a ticket as well but my mum gave it to my cousin instead of an Easter egg.

loved the article DaveT, but seriously, for a guy of your writing skills you need to do better than this: "Years ago I wrote a piece about how a school pal, Ed Cockroft and me, went to the 1962 FA Cup Final:"

you and Ed Cockcroft are the object, and the 1962 Cup Final is the subject. "I" is the objective pronoun.

Whatever the merits or otherwise of davet's colloquial English, I never fail to finish reading and enjoying his many articles on this board and elsewhere. To my mind that's what makes a good writer and he is one of them!

Clegghall you and me agree... I have this argument with the publishers who point this same thing out... me or I.
I tell them I want it to read like I am having a conversation.

There is a difference between those who don't understand grammar and punctuation and those who, for aesthetic reasons, choose to ignore it. You my friend are in the second group. Try telling someone who writes in dialect they don't know grammar, at best you'd get laughed at. Grammatical rules are made to be broken, as long as you know what you are breaking.

A damn nice read by the way.

So is it "When I were a lad" or is it "When I was a lad"?

Loved reading your article Dave
