Shame. They have done well. But this is as poor a pool of players as I ever remember them having to choose from. So probably as good a move for them as it is Ireland.

Maybe someone with new ideas might come in and change it but i doubt it.

Mick McCarthy coming back looks favourite. Those calling for a complete change are touting the Dundalk manager who has done really well (think it’s Dundalk).
Tony Cascarino just on radio talking about it - does not sound like O’Neils biggest fan - he said O’Neil was very intolerant with ex players who had a view and rude with the press.

O'Neill has had his chips really , maybe a Championship outfit at best , hey should have gone to Stoke when they wanted him last year .
As for Keane ( the Tea Boy ) really can't see what's in store for him as he just has not got it anymore , but don't think he was ever up to it as a manager .
We have six managers which the media think have a chance Mick Mc seems to be # 1 but I did smile at Fat Sam on the list , hey we will see .

To be fair their current squad is abysmal. I would be surprised if anyone could make a difference.

With the possible exception of Seamus Coleman, they havent one player who would get near any other decent international side.

They’ve been dealt a very poor hand. Gone in a short time from Robbie Keane, Shane Long and Jon Walters, who all scored international goals to Robinson & Maguire from Nobenders who don’t.
Any defence with Keogh in it is going to struggle.
Players win matches not managers.

Problem with playing such poor football is that fans will just about tolerate it if it's getting results but if results turn you're under pressure immediately. That's what the likes of Allardyce, Pulis and to a lesser extent Dyche have found out.

The straw that broke the camels back was the game against Northern Ireland, I sat and watched a team that on paper was inferior, technically and tactically outplay us from start to finish, no going back from that.
As for the future, I would love to see Stephen Kenny get the job, best domestic manager in a long while, unfortunately the FAI is notoriously risk averse so I think Mick McCarthy is in pole position, whoever gets the job after a year of zombie football the only way is up.

Keane hasn't done well in management (apart from the first season in charge of Sunderland), but I do like him as a pundit on ITV, as he says it how it is. But I can imagine how players won't like him. One stray pass and it's hairdryer time. I bet he got on their wick.

Been on the cards for a while. They've had a lot of injuries to some of their better players, as well as seen a few good players come to the end of their careers but it hasn't been good and I can't think many Irish fans will be sad to see the back of them.

Good news for fans of Keane as a pundit (like myself).

Now as much as I like Mick you should never go back , Kenny has done very well with Dundalk but he blew out when he had his chance in Scotland and had the biggest job in the league of Ireland as he was poor with Rovers .
As for Big Sam hummmm not sure , he started out as manager of Limerick maybe he would see this as full circle for him .

Wenger would be great in theory. But i doubt fans would have patience and i doubt he would be able to work magic with such a poor pool of layers.

McCarthy is probably the best choice for that squad. Especially when you look how ipswich are doing now.
