Half Time

When I was a lad, at half time, four things happened at half time.

1. A band played.
2. The half time draw was displayed on a blackboard on a pole and carried around the ground as confirmation.
3. Half time scores were displayed by hanging number tiles, one at a time, on hooks, to show the score. Match A 3-0. Match B 0-0 etc.
You needed a programme to know what Match A was.
4. The fans all swapped ends.

All the fun has gone!

I mis the Pie ad Chips game. Even if the pie did look like an enormous pile ring.

I can remember a blanket being carried round when the band was playing and coins thrown by the crowd were supposed to be "caught" in the blanket. Coins landed all over the place and after full time there was a real scrum by the wall trying to pick up the coins.

I was one of those St John Ambulance people ..... many a time struggling through the crowd to get to the person in trouble, or, if a really big crowd asking them to pass the affected supporter down to the touchline by passing them over their heads!
Worst case for me, shot at the Cricket Field end went wide and hit a chap face centre splitting his glasses and damaging his eye, looked pretty bad, glad when the ambulance rushed him off to hospital. Often wondered how he got on.

Remember as a kid being passed down the crowd from back to front ( Freddie Mercury style) When you got to the front you got lifted over the wall and sat with your back to the wall. After the game your Dad came to collect you. Imagine that in todays world !!! I guess I was like 5.

When my mother started going on (1947 - she was 14) the norm was for father to say "let the child through" and people would squeeze apart to let the children get to the front. Though father got some dirty looks when (being five foot nothing) he used to squeeze through after her to get to the front of the crowd.

This was in the enclosure in at the Cricket Field End, I believe. The Long side would have been a step too far, even for the most liberated of female teenager.

From memory there were two enclosures.one in front of the Bob Lord stand and one that ran the full length of the longside.Turnstiles were provided to gain access to the enclosures and seem to remember it was an extra shilling (5p) to go in...its a long time ago and am sure someone will correct me.

I lost my sight in that eye. Apparently, if the first responder there had acted quicker they could have saved it so thanks for that!!

Early 60s and died from cancer. He raised a hell of a lot of money for charities over a lot of years with his press ups.
