Slagging off David Lynch is Blasphemous in my book.........all credibility out the window.Rowls wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 10:59 amFilms that win Oscars (R) are often overrated. They are whatever matches the zeitgeist at that particular moment.
Certain things that turn me off:
Over directing - eg. Wes Anderson, David Lynch
Disabled character has mystical wisom
Non white character has mystical wisdom - eg. The Green Mile
Very clear "unreliable narrative" tropes
English people = evil
Irish people = kind
The lovable rascal trope
Anything that puts moralising ahead of storytelling
Jarring anachronisms in historical films: (i) expressing modern political sentiments (ii) modern usage of language
Any product placement that is noticeable
Musicals
Nicholas Cage

"The wookies are too small". I'm not sure I'll be able to watch any Star Wars films again without that on my mind.dsr wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 1:11 amLike many other space films, it treats a planet as having a population of thousands all in contact with each other. Planets aren't the size of small towns, they have to be huge to be inhabitable. You can't defeat an empire with a few small battles. Spaceships left in the desert can't take off again without servicing. The two men who went against the Admiral's orders in a later film and caused the loss of 90% of the army, weren't disciplined. (Or shot.) The wookies are too small and slow to win any battles. All sorts.
As entertainment it's good, and like you say perhaps that's all they aimed for, but it's held (by some) to a higher standard - hence overrated. IMHO!

Another vote for Titanic - 1958s A Night To Remember is superb by comparison
Shutter Island - definitely
I'd add Slumdog Millionaire to the list

The Usual Suspects. Boooooring. And Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I want to love it (it’s totally my thing) but I’ve tried to watch it 5 times and always doze off before the running in the trees bit.

A Clockwork Orange
Re: Over rated films…
Talking of predictable movie endings. Debbie does Dallas. You could see what was going to come next in every scene. 🫣
