I don't care how good he is at the moment. We can't be left short in CM like last time. A loan would be perfect.

So is he signing or not? Conflicting reports abound.

I don't rate this bloke at all. I think it's £5M wasted, if that's what it turns out to be

As far as I can see the only source for this remain the John Percy tweet.
Everyone else is simply reporting that tweet or reporting reports of that (single) tweet.
Believe it when you see it would be my recommendation for this one.

The BBC's Pat Murphy says:
"Meanwhile Ashley Westwood looks like leaving Villa to join Burnley, either on a loan deal with a £5m option to buy in the summer, or a permanent deal today."

So we've gone from a potential sexy signing in Snodgrass to a semi sexy potential signing in Brady to Ashley Westwood

Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
The chances of finding someone willing to lend us a player better than the players who are in 13th in the Premier, is remote.Right_winger wrote:is he going to be a starter for us? The reported £5m is a lot for a player to be a back up.
He's nowhere near the ability of our current centre mids Barton included.
A loan as cover is meh to me. Would rather save the loan for someone decent.

Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
Sometimes wonder why the club employ scouts. You know, the trusted professionals who's job is to find talent and ensure they fit the requirements set by Dyche? They should obviously all be sacked, and we could just have a vote as to who we should sign?
Oh, but hold on, Trippier shouldn't be on the stadium wall either should he?
The number of people on this board who have made a judgement on Westwood 'not being good enough' is embarrassing. Get the humble pie ordered early, as they'll be out of stock in a few weeks.

So it's permanent because he is having a medical?
Do loan players not have medical checks before signing?

Loan with option to buy in summer would be most preferable. Hopefully this means we'll get two over the line today

Unused sub against Spurs so take it that means he isn't cup tied?
Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
The Birmingham Mail don't seem over enamoured with him. He sounds like a dyche type player though so maybe it's time to prove the villa fans wrong.

Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
BBC transfer deadline day thread is pretty poor. Not sure how they still haven't picked up on this.
Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
We do need cover in midfield and Westwood will provide that.
So if Barton is out for any length of time he's available and can step in.
We'll probably also need to replace one of our midfielders
during future games so, again we have someone who could step in.
Not a very inspiring signing but wise and sensible.

Interesting article.karatekid wrote:The Birmingham Mail don't seem over enamoured with him. He sounds like a dyche type player though so maybe it's time to prove the villa fans wrong.
"In some teams the basic ball-recycling role Westwood performs is more valued, but that’s often because there are other midfielders making more eye-catching contributions further up the field."
I've not seen much of Westwood so can't comment on him from personal experience but the quote is encouraging seen as we've lost Marney for the rest of the season - this type of midfielder sounds like more of a replacement for him than an more elaborate attacking player.
Some of the descriptions of the article remind me of David Jones a bit. Some Burnley fans really didn't like Jones whereas others really appreciated the role he played for the team. Either way, Jones was a constant player in two Burnley promotion sides so he must have been doing something right and in the same way, if Westwood is keeping other players out of the side for Villa then it probably means that he's doing the job the manager asked.

I like the line "a dedicated professional that al2ways did his best". Sounds like a good fit four our ethos!
Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
He's definitely an uninspiring signing but one I think will be very good for us.

Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
Having read the Birmingham Mail article, it looks as though he's a player who doesn't seek the limelight, follows instructions, works hard, keeps the game simple and does the basics very well indeed. Also has a little bit of technical quality as well.
Or to put it another way, a Sean Dyche-type midfielder.

"The cold reality of Westwood career at villa has shown that the majority of fans who go and watch the games, can't be all wrong. He has not been good enough as a central midfielder. He can't head the ball, tackle, defend, score goals, provide assists or provide a forward pass.
Glad to see him go."
Welcome to Turf Moor Ashley - we'll sort you out.

Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
Dyche has made it clear that he puts a lot of value on what midfield players do when they have not got ball, because for over 99.% of the game they do not have it, obviously Dyche sees these qualities in Westwood.
