Over a 38 game season, yes of course it was the single incident that got us relegated...
Come on GIADJ you should know by now not to apply common sense on this MB.

Unfortunately Collins is now too good for the championship as shown in his great performances. It hurts he is going to leave us but aslong as its invested back into the squad, it could be a positive overall
If we got £25m :- £12m striker, £8 million winger and a £5 million keeper for example (easy for me to say)
Highly doubt we'll reinvest all the £25m, if we even end up with that much given the sell on to Stoke.

Can't see us splashing £12m on a striker either, £8m winger could well be O'Hare, Muric assuming we land him will hopefully be less than £5m.

I've set my expectations to; we will lose Cornet, Collins, McNeil and possibly Vydra, all of which need replacing, given the expected funds incoming, I also expect quite a few more signings, in addition to Cullen (hopefully today) and a GK. Possibly 2 GK's if WH also leaves, which to me would still be a surprise, but I've been surprised before.

All of which means, virtually a new team with a new manager playing new tactics, it'll certainly be exciting and different but not without an above 50% chance to fail, certainly in the first few months as they will have to gel. Several new faces still to arrive, they will obviously have far less time to be fit and understand team mates and the tactics, yet there's always a late team charge from somewhere, I'd be happy with that late charge to the playoff's and be the in form team. I think it will be a struggle to be top two, but not impossible, yet the pattern is being set following the AP playbook, buy young/cheap, improve and sell on.

Still waiting to see what the striker options will be yet, which is another concern, as time seems to fly by and we'll be playing our first game of the season.

It was his silly handball that put us here.
We got relegated because we was so poor over 38 games. We wouldn't of beat Newcastle regardless of the handball because we played awful, he was probably out best player on the day.

We knew we would lose players..for all we know Collins has gone to VK/Pace and said I want to leave..Wolves want me..
Wolves opening bid of 20.5m we want 40m negotiations begin. Burnley probably will accept 25m + add ons taking it to 30m and sell on clause!
If we paid 12m for Collins 12 months ago that is a 13m gross profit..Stoke are believed to have 20% sell on fee which will be on the profit (2.4m) so we have a profit of 10.6m? Plus our initial outlay of 12m (future payments) off the books..
That is good business and we have seen how the 10m from Pope has been spent well.
The extra 10+m might help us get O'Hare over the line and be out towards a striker and keeper.
And in the future if Collins performs we get another 5m and is sold for 60/70m we get a sell on of say another 6/8m.
Taking the total transfer to over 40m.

An excellent summary Kate, and similar to my thoughts about our overdue overhaul, ideally we'd have carried out these changes gradually, but given the circumstances of relegation, plus the amount of OOC players we have little change but to perform major surgery on the squad, however patience will be vital, as I can see us threading water for the early period of the season, while our new signings take time to gel, and also get accustomed to Kpmpany's methods.

I'd certainly expect another 4-5 arrivals before the end of the window, with a striker being a priority if we're to push towards the summit of the Championship.

This coming season will be interesting, but it'll also involve plenty of up's and downs over the next 9 months.

The frustration is though that we know there is a top six , £50m player there we will not get the full value for and top performances in the meantime.
We don’t know if there is a top six £50m player there at all.

Good business for who? MSD? Garlick?

It's only good business if we reinvest some of the cash in quality, if this money enables us to get a proper striker, O'Hare and a goalkeeper, fair enough.

Spice,
I think we need to accept that the players who have left (or will leave) are doing so because they do not want to play in the 2nd tier on 2nd tier wages.
What can the club do about it?
Replace them with adequate experience and quality. If you're selling Collins for £30m, we've replaced him with a loan, a freebie kid and a young kid from League One for £1.75m. I don't mind the signings, there has to be some of these funds reinvested on proper ready to go quality though and those players will cost more than £2-3m.

For that fee I think it suggests the release clause is accurate.

Got to hope the majority is reinvested

Interesting one. Percy yesterday said the clubs were ‘negotiating’ the fee, surely if it was a release clause there’s no negotiation?

I’d imagine if Collins did have a £20 mill release clause, there’d be more than just Wolves in for him.
Strong suggestions that there is no release clause so up to us whether we sell him for whatever offer comes in.

Percy has now reported that everything agreed between the clubs and Collins to have his medical today.

On one hand, yes it would be good business - on the other it leaves our defence looking a long way off in terms of experience, so I think we’d need to sign a replacement centre back too. Cut off Stoke’s percentage and the fact we’ll surely need to use some of the fee on debt and you’re gonna end up with similarly priced signings to what we’ve seen so far, in my opinion.

Its almost as if the first largeish offer is accepted ( as with Pope ) You might draw the conclusion the club need money and they need it quickly...

Its not little in the context of championship centre halves I'm afraid

It all depends on the add ons and sell on fee, and whether Collins fulfills his potential, and if he does, then it will be a nice earner for us down the line

If they want Muric, O’Hare and a striker within the next week or two, you’re probably looking at 15-20m right there - it would be realistic to suggest they need cash to fund these moves, what other Championship club could afford that without selling?

True, but we still had to agree a fee as he was under 24 (is it 24? 23? 22? 21?)

I was thinking more of the "real" frees (who want bigger wages)

If there’s no release clause it’s a bad deal if it’s in the £20-22m range as reported. The happy clappers will struggle to spin that one in the manner they did with the paltry fee of £10m for Pope, considering Collins contractual status and the fact he is allegedly courted by half the Premier League.

One can only assume we are either needing a sale quickly or the player has thrown his toys out of the pram (or both?). The other alternative, and the one we need to hope that it is, is that Kompany has said ‘yes’ to this on the basis of the leeway it gives him to develop the rest of the squad.

On the face of it, an upsetting transfer fee - but the proof will be in the pudding on the pitch at Huddersfield as to what we did with the money. It may work out for the better, at this point nobody knows so it’s hard to be negative or positive about this other than to contest that the fee is poor.

It was inevitable we would lose some of our most valuable assets in this window and I expect after Collins there will be one or two more but I do expect some of those touted for leaving to actually stay. I'm confident that the sale of Collins will spark incomings during this week which were already agreed but needed confirmation of having the funds from the Collins sale. I expect Cullen, Muric, O'Hare and possibly Knight this week together with bids made on a foreign striker and links to another goalkeeper and another striker.

Very disappointing from the club if the fee is 21m.

We've basically signalled to the whole of the Premier League that its open season on our players and we'll accept 2/3 their value.

I would expect Cornet and a few others might follow yet.

I don't see us doing much next season, it's going to take a year to rebuild the squad and get some cohesion back.

I’m hoping that was a release clause despite some saying it didn’t exist. Also hoping there are addons that we are choosing not to report so that the fees we have to pay don’t go crazy!

I cannot for the life of me make sense of this fee with such a long contract, with the clauses Stoke will have and a year of wages we’ve basically broke even. A rarity for Burnley these days where the ball was in our court because of his contract and we’ve allowed Wolves to have our pants down

Its a sizeable fee for a 21 year old centre half with half a season of premier league experience

Look, if we'd stayed up, then we'd easily have got north of £30 million for him, but we didn't

We clearly need the money, and I'm sure we have add ons and a sell on fee (if we haven't, then we will have structured the payment to suit our needs so we'll get a lot more up front)

At this level, without a billionaire backer who is willing to subsidise premier league wages, then everyone is available

I would expect us to be active in the transfer market (both ins and outs) right up to the window this year

Chatting to a mate about this on the phone last night, but I don't remember anything remotely like this and the closest we could get to was the season Cotterill took over and we had about seven players

Surely with the promise he has shown we’d want to be making more than say 3-5m profit once you take wages and Stoke into account?

Stoke will make around 1-1.5m off this deal. You can’t really include cost of wages in the deal as that’s been covered and accounted for by Premier League TV money last season. I’ve never heard or seen sales take into account wages paid to the player. 21m + performance add ons & sell on clause isn’t too bad, if it allows us to reinvest on more quality.

I think selling our best players at cut price is actually a good thing.

Would you be happy if we were trying to sign a player for £30+ million who has only played a handful of games in the PL, or would you be saying that’s to high and he’s not worth that? I would like him to stay but £21 - £25m is about right

Selling Collins for just 20.5 really dampens this window.

My personal opinion is that we are one marquee signing away from winning the league.

It’s now pretty likely we are not going to be promoted.

Surely with the promise he has shown we’d want to be making more than say 3-5m profit once you take wages and Stoke into account?
He's being sold at a profit after we got relegated

I'm not happy about it, but we need funds to rebuild and for other things, and the only way we can raise funds is by selling our players at a profit

Massively.

Unless there was a clause, and I hope there was, because otherwise it makes us look pretty inept at selling!

What has been on my mind since the Collins news came out was Adam Webster at Brighton for instance, he was signed by them for close to 20m when he was older and had never played in the premier league, the fee just seems strangely low

Great context. That was based on the assumption we were keeping the best CB in the league.

We have now lost said CB and still need to sign a top striker.

Not a fire sale if the money is reinvested. We’ll have to wait and see. This does explain his interview after the last Ireland game when rather than the usual bland stuff about looking forward to working with Kompany etc. he said he had no idea what his future would be. Have to say I much prefer to lose him than McNeil if one had to go.

Depends how the deal is structured, I.e. add-on's etc, and if cashing in on Collins allows us to complete 3/4 signings over the next week or so it might turn out to be worth it in the long run, also explains why we've been purchasing so many CB'S recently, if we suspected Nathan might be on his way.
