...in a crowd of 21-22,000 when they averaged over 10,000 that season? :P

Okay, their games in the second half of the season were poorly supported, but they had to get a point to save themselves.

I left at half-time. We were utterly pathetic.

SURELY York away in 1992 must be the highest unofficial following. We took over the city!!!!!

I can remember a Div 4 top of the table clash with Stan Flashman's Barnet, at Underhill. Not huge in record terms but the tightest I have ever been packed into a section of a ground! Not many quoted as the 'gate' afterwards but I reckon Burnley had more than the ground total quoted!

It was the match when Mr Bean appeared as a steward!

Ha ha...yes I remember Mr Bean at Underhill that night. The whole Burnley end chanting "Mr Bean, Mr Bean, Mr Bean" and him stood at the front pretending not to hear. Only a couple of thousand tops I reckon but it was certainly packed. The Sheff Utd cup game and Carlisle Away '92 would be the biggest I've been in. Bit gutted I'm not there today.

Was at Utd in 65. Still got newspaper cutting showing "13000 supporters leaving Burnley Bus Station".
Wasn't it a Law overhead kick which sunk us?

Terrifying outside on that lane/track behind the terrace on the long side of the ground. Crush going on due to lack of space and numbers so a fence got ripped down. I wasn't in control of where I went due to the crush, not long after Hillsboro too. What did the Met do next.............send the mounted police in FFS.

Drew level with the overhead kick then Crerand won it with a shot Adam should have stopped.

The quietest big away following I’ve been part of today.

While not the biggest away followings, the away games playing Wycombe Wanderers always had as many and some games more Burnley supporters there than the home side. They rubbed their hands at the money going into the clubs coffers when we arrived in town and usually took the points as well.

I could have written those words myself!

On the way out, the police horse was coming down that track, for some unknown and dangerous reason and that caused a blockage upstream. I remember turning that corner at the exit from the terrace and ending up in a heap on top of that very fence....along with lots of others...including you!

houseboy wrote:The Preston figure for '73 sounds about right as we probably had a bit more than half the attendance of around 21k. No way it was 15k as that would make about 6k Preston fans who needed a point that day to avoid relegation. Can't see them only having that many for such an important game for them.
The following at PNE was way more than half the crowd. 15,000 minimum. Some PNE fans boycotted the game. Forget the reason. PNE fans had the away end as Burnley comprehensively took over the home end and also had nearly all the sides.

15,000 Burnley fans at Crystal Palace in 1914 and the same amount at Hillsborough in 74. Don't know how many Burnley fans at Wembley in 47 and 62, but loads more for all the Wembly visits since. Maine road in 1960 must have been a big following.

To be fair I wasn’t. I’ve heard the 15,000 figure a lot to be honest, but 18,000 suggests a fair amount of exaggeration, unless their fans were truly boycotting the game.

4587 at Wigan a few Christmas' ago and we probably could have sold plenty more. I knew of a few in the home ends that day.

I honestly can't say mate. I know it was more than half and I know the attendance was about 21k. As for the boycott I've never heard the story but it may well be true. I remember being in the Preston end and not seeing a single PNE fan. I also remember being on the pitch at the end. Great days to be sure.

I went to the Maidstone United v Burnley game (at Dartford) and there were so many Burnley fans there, we effectively had three sides of the ground and Maidstone just one. I was standing with a mate in the Maidstone end hoping to have a swift (police-free) exit at the end of the game but the coppers felt it would be simpler and safer to let the Burnley fans leave first, so I ended up being in a lock-in with the Maidstone fans. Very humiliating for them - hilarious for me.

Talking of packed in.
Didn't we have a wall collapse at the front of the Burnley supporters during a match?
Was it at Stafford Rangers in first round of FA cup?
Anyone injured?
