He had to go after that 5-0 thrashing at Carlisle in the auto windscreen, one of the worst performances I have ever seen from a Burnley side
Agree it was an appalling display but the following week we played at home to Stockport County winning a thriller 4-3 and finding ourselves in 6 th place in the league and looking at least at play-offs again. Never able to build on that and a sorry mess ensued.

The two biggest issues we faced with that promotion season were that we probably weren't good enough to go up in the 1st place and Mullen wasn't going to be up to managing at that level.

But culturally was the club going to dispense with Mullen at that point, given how long it eventually took?

One signing he did make that season was Kurt Nogan who, for me, was the second best striker we had in the 90’s after Andy Payton. Think he only joined towards the end, who knows how we could have done with him signed instead at the time we got Liam Robinson?

Phenomenal player, sad how it ended. Would love to get him on and get the lowdown on he and Heath’s relationship/the fallout behind his move to Preston. Difficult man to find though sadly as he’s right up there for me in the guests I’m trying to make happen.

I believe we only in part managed to get Nogan because he had gone on a long barren run with Brighton ..and probably wasn't going to be the answer that season anyway by that stage.

A good signing that season was Paul Shaw. Very tidy player in his loan with us, don't think he really kicked on though.

I thought he had a big future in the game after his short spell with us, thought he was really good

Regarding Robbie Blake, I’d be interested to know why he thinks he didn’t carve out more of a career in the top division.

He had more skill and vision than many a top flight player. A lack of pace didn’t help him, but perhaps more to it than that.

Their loss was our gain mind!!

You forgot the club/chairman didn't have the finances to be at championship level.

Nogan had gone twenty odd games without a goal for Brighton when we signed him. It’s hard to believe really for a player I consider one of four real natural goalscorers we’ve had in my time watching alongside Irvine, Payton & Austin.

Not forgotten. However we partly got there by 'accident' and didn't have a person at the helm up to running a club a Div 1 level.

He went on the radio lancs phone in to complain they wouldn't give him a pay rise from £750 a week to £950.

But the chairman wasn’t for letting anyone in who might have had the finance.

and before that run, had been linked with a £1M move to various Prem clubs.

Yes, had been prolific for Brighton prior to that run.

During this time I went on a midweek works celebration starting at the Sparrow Hawk hotel on Fence. I managed to cadge a lift to the pub and ended up getting there early. Kurt Nogan was at the bar, smoking and downing pints like no tomorrow. I chatted with him for about 45 minutes before my workmates turned up, discussing the then new signing Paul Barnes amongst many other things.

He was a sound guy and keen to talk. He did though get through 3 more pints and about as many fags. I was surprised at how much he was ‘abusing’ his body when he was a leading successful player at the time. With a bit more commitment he could have been even better.

Everyone was doing the same, so it didn't matter back then.

Although Wenger might have been in charge by then. It started to slowly change from him.

Not a question for Robbie specifically but in general, I've found at the end of the interviews, after weaving through their careers, I wanted to know what they were up to now, what careers have they moved into after football so maybe just a quick question about this at the end of the interview just to conclude everything.

Happy to say we had a fantastic 90 minutes or so with Robbie last night. Some great tales, and if anyone ever questioned his love for Burnley FC, I’d urge you to watch it when we put it up.

Claretburns - got you an answer from the man himself on whether he still has his Bad Beat Bobs too!

Interesting what he said about Mourinho at the end. Although Spurs can afford to play attractive football. We can't.
