I can honestly say there is no evidence to support the claim that the death penalty will be a deterrent. If someone is going to rape or murder someone they will do it no matter the sentence or outcome at court.
It might not prevent first time happenings but it can certainly prevent future incidents I'd spare a thought for this poor man adopting that stance
BBC News - Released murderer's second killing 'horrific'

I suspect if I looked I'd find others it took less than a minute to unearth that.

Barry George was convicted of Jill Dando murder when too much emphasis was put on a so called expert witness saying residue found in his pocket could only have come from a gun ,, it later transpired it could have come from any firework or playing cards ,, evidence like this should be more closely scrutinised

This is one of many reasons why it was abolished. There are hundreds, if not thousands appeals against wrongful convictions every year. Some folks on here would suggest there is no corruption in the police.

I might be wrong, but didn't it say the two key witnesses were later found to both be serving time in prison themselves at the time this attack took place?
If that's true, then shows what a farce and disgrace our legal system is .
No forensic evidence whatsoever linking the poor man with this case.
I too was wondering though why the documentary skipped over the details of him being arrested in Grimsby, and not having anyone locally confirming his whereabouts at the time to assist his defence.

My family went through 12 months of hell last year with something similar to this case I will also add as well as the police not being fit for purpose I will add the CPS. Certainly in our case one turned up who looked in her 20s dressed as though she was going out on a Saturday night and then said she had only received the case notes the night before the hearing. The good outcome for us the lies and ineptness of the police and prosecution came to light

I watched the programme and as a Defence Lawyer who usually doesn't like to criticise others in my profession, I was gobsmacked that his defence team did not apply to introduce evidence of a non-defendant's bad character with regards to the two witnesses who had appalling dishonesty offences on their antecedent history.

Didn’t the two witnesses provide their ‘statements’ in a police station when they’d been arrested on some other matter??
