Is it not already about £6 for a pint of lager on the Turf now? I am all for some local beers on, but I think the price only needs to go one way

No doubt to be followed by thousands of people who didn't drink in them bemoaning it.blatherwickstattoos wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2024 3:20 pmYeah mate. A lot of places struggling atm. Burnley looks like it could be heading a bit like Blackburn with pubs shutting down all over

Hopefully with a (much needed) change of government, the average family will have more disposable income in their pockets and pubs/restaurants etc will start to thrive once again.

Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
Was surprised the Loom stopped doing food, always seemed busy when i was there. Seriously grim times for the pub trade at the moment.
It feels like barely anybody under the age of 35 goes out drinking anymore.

Exactly this. The price of beer at wholesalers has gone up loads. Just pricing the working class out of going out like they once did.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2024 3:53 pmHopefully with a (much needed) change of government, the average family will have more disposable income in their pockets and pubs/restaurants etc will start to thrive once again.

Well, they don’t have to put them up of coursePoulton-le-Claret wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2024 3:17 pmIs it not already about £6 for a pint of lager on the Turf now? I am all for some local beers on, but I think the price only needs to go one way![]()

Although I appreciate I don’t get out much so a couple of expensive pints on a Saturday doesn’t kill me and others may just stay in the pubs, most of which do have other decent craft beers.

Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
This is the point.
We can blame the cost of living crisis to an extent, but the trend away from drinking at pubs has been happening for many years now, and not just drinking at pubs, drinking alcohol in general.
There's been a huge cultural change with large numbers of under 35s, (and even under 45s) not drinking alcohol, or only drinking it very occasionally.
I don't think that it's just down to cost.

All true. The younger lads and lasses who’ve joined our work recently either drink sparingly or don’t drink at all. A lot save up to go to big events like festivals.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2024 7:20 pmThis is the point.

Sensible. Why spend all of your disposable income on going to the same miserable pubs every weekend.Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2024 7:33 pmAll true. Save it and do something better with it, go and live abroad , go to festivals etc. I'm not sure the pub culture was a good thing.

Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
While people drinking less alcohol is generally a good thing, not all pubs are miserable. Some put in a real effort both in terms of the ambiance and the drinks on offer (as the aforementioned Loom do in my experience).

Disagree with this. Pubs are part of our culture and a big part of people's social lives. The way things are going there'll barely be any left in 10 years. Is it really better for everybody to be sat at home watching Netflix?
Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
Are they the 2 options..loads of pubs or netflix?
No late night cafes, restaurants/bars etc with much higher quality.
Many pubs serve crap beer, crap food and crap cocktails generally and importantly for the young generation, they look pretty crap too. The world's moving on and doesn't accept rubbish product as easily anymore.

Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
How do you think Crow wood and the many other fitness gyms thrive if everyone is sat at home watching netflix?
Surely the social interaction at these is just as life enhancing as going to a pub two or three times each week? ... and much better for your health too, ....... and on balance probably cheaper.
Of course there are many other activities that young people enjoy in addition to the gym, and most of them are at least of equal merit to spending an evening sat in a pub. The bottom line is that for a pub to survive in 2024 it has to adapt and be far more than just a waterhole.

Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
There will always be well-run pubs.
Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
You can't get away with pulling the wool over people eyes these days. There’s a reason why pubs/restaurants close so often is because what they serve is crap. People are far more knowledgable these days in that regard and simply won’t pay for what places try and serve.
Would the new generation of gym goers go to tatty, sweaty, ran down old gyms? No.
Treat people fairly, serve what they are paying for and there’s no issue.

I think you need to put your post in the past tense: pubs were a part of our culture and a big part of people's social lives.
The culture is changing and as a result, pubs are closing.

It would be nice if the new Lidl offered jobs to the staff of The Star Pub.
Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
Just a question, why would you go for a carvery at a crap pub. You have said that you were driving, so you could have gone to one of the many decent pubs in this sreaVintage Claret wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2024 4:41 pmUsed to go in now and again for a Sunday carvery with Mrs VC and that was normally ok to be fair.
Usually driving so only ever had a beer once when I wasn't (Mayday bank holiday) and yeah the beer wasn't great then
Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
The one that baffles me is the Rose and Bowl. Really mediocre carvery but everyone seems to rave about it.
Been there once and will never set foot in there again, poor standard food and really outdated decor.
Felt like it was 1998 when I was in there.
Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
i agree, dreadful place, i could forgive the decor, but the food is something like my nan would make in 1988

Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
Simply because it was a convenient location for all our party and we liked the carvery there ( plus it was good vfm at around a tenner which is an important consideration for a 'Syker)

Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
I may be one of the exceptions but I found the Star fine. It wouldn't be my first (or second or third) choice for a night out but for before the match it was pretty convenient with car park, train station, lots of screens, lots of tables and fast bar/food service (so many pubs still seem to struggle with the concept of putting on some extra staff when they're busy).

Exactly. It never claimed to be some gourmet gastropub and it performed its function efficiently.aggi wrote: ↑Wed Jun 19, 2024 11:39 amI may be one of the exceptions but I found the Star fine. Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
The Hollywood Star, Queen Vic and now Molly Rigbys in Padiham is up for sale according to todays Express.
Be no watering holes left soon.
Long letter from Roger Frost in todays Express about the Queen Vic and how poor he thought the pub and food side of the business was.

Re: Star pub & carvery, Manchester Road
Yeah queen Vic food was dreadful also. I'd been in the odd time just for a pint and the service was shocking also, be stood there 10 mins while the staff fanny about doing nothing. I don't have any sympathy for poorly run places. Get what they deserve
