Has anyone been there for a night out, any good? Taking her indoors out for her birthday staying in hotel. She'll be 37 and I'm 39 (mental age 22) both young at heart and enjoy a drink!
Any other places more then welcome. Needs to be somewhere with plenty of bars, not been out for about 8 months so need drenk!

We went on a race weekend.
Very good. Lots of great places to eat and drink ( some quite expensive )
The places and people we met were very friendly and welcoming.
Didn't see any aggro or places that I'd say avoid.
Spent 1 day and night eating and drinking in the center.
Another day a short drive out of the center where there was lots of little cafes, bars and side streets with pubs and shops on. Was a mini Village type place, which suprisingly the better night out IMO.
The atmosphere was great, very busy etc although the locals said it is always like that on a race weekend.
Not sure what it's like normally.

I had my stag night there. Great night. Lived in Chester for 5 years after my wedding. I celebrated my 36th wedding anniversary last summer.
I was back in Chester last summer for a day. Some things have changed and some things haven't.
There are - at least there used to be - more pubs (we called most of them pubs back then) per square mile than in any other town/city in the country. One of our stag night group was a lawyer in Chester. His work often got him involved in planning/licensing for new pubs/bars. We planned a crawl based on his map of licensed premises - starting down by the river and walking up through the Rows.
I'm sure you can create a map based on google and trip advisor these days.
I recommend a walk around the city walls, on the morning after the night out. You will both enjoy it.

I live there so slightly biased. It' a lovely place for a night out and very popular for weekend breaks. Lot's a great restaurants. My favourites "1539" (Overlooking racecourse) "Joseph & Benjamins" (Top of Northgate St; Booking required) "Architect" (Once more near racecourse) "Bar Lounge" (Bottom of Watergate St) Carluccios is great for a Sunday brunch and it is on Upper Bridge St so is right in the centre of town.
I think the village Macca is referring to is Hoole which is referred to by the locals as "Notting Hoole" due to the similarity with Notting Hill. "The Suburbs" and "Sticky Walnut" are very good restaurants over there.
There is very little trouble in the city as long as you avoid races days and the local football derbies with Wrexham. (Even Wrexham away results in trouble in Chester for some reason)
Best things to do are a walk down the river. (Cross over the footbridge and turn left for a walk along the meadows. Very scenic.) Walk around the racecourse. You can get all of the way around as long as the races are not scheduled. The Cathedral is very popular as is a walk around the old Roman Walls.

Capt John.
Hoole , that's the one. Stayed in a lovely B&B there.
Was a couple of years ago we visited. We only stayed 2 days, but a place we always mention going back to. We have with the kids for the weekend, but did family things like walking around the castle and sight seeing. Also stayed in a travelogue which isn't as good as a nice B&B IMO.

Don't know about the bars there but as said a walk around the Walls is a must.
The only place in the country where the walls are complete ( or near complete) I think.

Just had a weekend in Chester and it is brilliant. Get taxi to stop you off around the Cathedral and there are numerous great pubs and restaurants. Great atmosphere and numerous things to do.
