Avalanche in Tignes this morning..

Post by hampsteadclaret » Tue Mar 07, 2017 11:10 am

This looks like a bad one.

The avalanche was on piste and the slope was thought to be busy at the time..a blue slope [easy] poor visibility, high winds.

- avalanches shouldn't usually happen 'on piste'..they are meant to be safe areas for skiiing...I guess though that in a 'natural' environment like the mountains, just anything can happen.

update..French sources suggesting 'no deaths' despite the serious avalanche.

I'm amazed if the avalanche took out an open piste - that shouldn't happen in any circumstances, if there's the slightest doubt the piste is shut and the avalanche safely "induced" by charges.

All skiers accounted for according to BBC. Off to La Rosierre in a couple of weeks which is only a few miles away - can't imagine an avalanche on an 'on piste' run. Been the last 3 years and regularly hear explosions echoing around the mountains where any risks are being dealt with.

I've just been advised on the below and wanted to share this news on Adverse Weather just so you are aware

Impact on our activity:

- Zip codes beginning by : 29-, 56- : Linehauls are delayed, some roads are blocked in our depots catchment areas (29A, 29B, 56A)

- Zip codes beginning by : 03-, 06-, 15-, 16-, 17-, 18-, 19-, 22-, 23-, 24-, 33-, 35-, 36-, 37-, 42-, 43-, 44-, 48-, 49-, 53-, 63-, 69-, 79-, 83-, 85-, 86- : some PUD rounds may be delayed due to heavy winds

We had that from TNT this morning, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are issues with skiing.

It doesn't sound like a serious avalanche. I've not seen pictures but they say they've checked every square metre of the piste. If it was a big one it would take a lot longer. Reports of people buried were because they found skis and poles in the snow (without skiers attached)

The affected piste was by the Tichot lift which is the last one down into The hotels at Val Claret
