Re: Jon walters
I always assumed he was some sort of attacking midfielder, but he's classed as a striker by many.
His scoring ratio as a striker isn't much cop though, so I'd be unsure about him playing that position for us.

He still good at holding the ball up and knows were the back of the net is . Bit more of a target man than what we have at the minute . I agree we should be looking at someone a bit younger and more prolific

We could really do better than Jon Walters surely

Re: Jon walters
Could see him as a Barnes replacement. Only needs to beat a 15% shots to goal percentage.

Unlikely. Walters would be an excellent signing.SGr wrote:We could really do better than Jon Walters surely

Scoring ratio not great but has looked good when seen him. He seems to get the ball up the pitch in an aggressive style.

34 later this year. Surely we should be looking to do better / younger than this ?

A player I rate although do our scouts only focus on Irish players? Will be the complete Irish International squad at Turf Moor next season at this rate...

Re: Jon walters
Could be seen as an upgrade on Barnes, although given his age it would be a short term one. If we were to sign him I'd hope it was more as a bit part player than someone to build next season's team around.

Jesus they will be changing our name to the Ireland B team shortly.
Re: Jon walters
I'd take Walters, Whelan and Adam from them.

Re: Jon walters
Didn't he score 2 own goals and miss a penalty in one game?
Re: Jon walters
Looks like he is struggling to get in the the Stoke side in last year or so.....which would be a big concern to me given that they have hardly been prolific with the likes of Diouf and Berahino - the latter of which has been absolute garbage since he signed.
He is getting on a bit now aswell and looks a bit weighty / slow to me.
However - I would not say any of the above to his face because by all accounts he is renowned for being a real hard case !!

Re: Jon walters
Yes please.
Re: Jon walters
I said to my dad yesterday that Walters would be an astute signing for us. A typical Dyche type player, works his socks off, plenty of experience at this level. Would be a decent signing for 12 months.
Re: Jon walters
Age is not an issue, how old is recent England player Defoe and that big Swedish lad Man U managed to sign. Age is not an issue getting goals that win points is and if SD thinks Walters would be better than our current strikers, get him in.

Re: Jon walters
I think it's important we strike a balance between experience and youth so I wouldn't be averse to us signing him. He has vast Premier League experience (224 appearances) and has scored 43 goals. He's not a prolific scorer by any means (he's reached 8 goals in a couple of top flight seasons) but there's obviously some talent there.
Edit - The following Mark Hughes quote from the article makes this one sound very likely:
"Comparing him to other Premier League strikers in terms of ground covered, high intensity work and sprints, he comes up very favourably. He'll always be judged on that because that's a huge part of his game."

Why don't we just approach Martin O'Neil and rebrand ourselves as Irish Clarets.

Re: Jon walters
What on earth are people's problems with Barnes? He's been one of our better players imo. He's the only one capable of bringing the ball out of the air (which when you spend most of the time punting it forwards is crucial), and he preformed well in the last premier league season. It seems that people don't like him because he's not a pretty footballer, the stick he's getting is completely unwarranted. He doesn't score many goals, however anyone who thinks he will in this system is sadly very wrong, his job is basically "battering ram" which he is very very effective at. He isn't a normal target man and is very "in-between" for a footballer, I think some people get confused and think this makes him a bad player.
For some reason everyone is happy to say, "the system doesn't suit (enter a generic midfielders name)" but then they pick certain players and decide they are dog dirt.
Can someone please explain what the issue is with Barnes? I can't be the only one scratching my head here. He's certainly been no worse than others and better than some, admittedly that doesn't mean we should keep him but what is the problem?

Would suit our system either up front or on the right hand side.
Age doesn't really bother me, he is an effective player.

Re: Jon walters
Should someone tell Dyche we don't want to be signing too many internationals from the same country?
Used to be miles better when we had no internationals playing for us.

Yes we will all have say three Hail Marys before each game. Maybe we should now, particularly at away matches.whiffa wrote:A player I rate although do our scouts only focus on Irish players? Will be the complete Irish International squad at Turf Moor next season at this rate...

Re: Jon walters
He'd only want to come if he was sure he'd start. That is his concern at Stoke. He looks very fit, is robust and works like crazy. A true SD player. It depends how much Stoke would want for him. He signed a contract extension not long ago. I'd like him. Be fine for a good couple of years at the top level.

Which strikers do we think we could sign with better records?
Re: Jon walters
Well on a personal note I'd look at Tammy Abraham from Chelsea. Cracking season with a poor Bristol side, very young so excellent sell on value, quick and decent on the ball. Just one example that I can think of at this moment in timeTall Paul wrote:He's not really an out and out striker though is he?

Re: Jon walters
If he averages a goal every 5 games I doubt we'd sign him for his goal scoring ability. Having said that it's no doubt comparable to Barnes and Vokes at this level.
Re: Jon walters
No chance of signing him permanently this summer and no evidence he'd be any better than Gray.SGr wrote:Well on a personal note I'd look at Tammy Abraham from Chelsea. I've seen teams linked with 15 million moves for him. If that's the going rate then why not try?Tall Paul wrote:No chance of signing him permanently this summer and no evidence he'd be any better than Gray.
4 goals in 21 for Walters this season, who'd obviously be an improvement on Gray...or Barnes...or Vokes...right??

Re: Jon walters
Walters would be an improvement on Barnes or Vokes, yes.
Re: Jon walters
Bloody hope there's another striker coming if we do sign him either way

Re: Jon walters
Jon Walters has been an outstanding player for Stoke and was for Ipswich prior to that. I hadn't realised he'd been at Stoke that long nor that he'd reached 33. Would Walters strengthen our team? That's a definite yes from me. Are we interested in signing him? No idea, but I see it is just one national paper linking him with us.

Re: Jon walters
If we are targeting players like Walters then it confirms that Dyches knowledge of players is very small.
