Please can anyone recommend any, yesterday my works issue ones split yet again, I'm looking at now paying for a decent pair myself, I prefer the shoe type ones as they are lighter.

Boots are there to protect your ankle and a decent pair will give them good support. Google the best pairs. Always have a decent budget for work boots as you're in them more than your trainers/shoes.

The old saying goes pay a lot for footwear and bedding. If you're not in one, you're in the other.

I used to pay around £100 a pair instead of the £6 work boots issued free off work.

Try to negotiate with your boss. If he's half decent he will allow you to buy a decent pair and contribute the cost of whatever it is he is happy to supply.

For example, your work issue boots cost your employer £25. The boots you want are £38. You buy the boots and your employer hands over £25.

Currently wearing Dunlop safety trainers from sports direct. Quite good.

I use Caterpillar steel toe cap boots wear them 5 days a week and get about 2 years out of them. I don't know how much they cost over here but i get them in the USA 2 pairs for $120

I wear Rock Fall boots - plastic not steel toecap that exceed the required safety standards and weigh around half as much as normal safety boots.

Quite obviously the boots provided by your employer are not fit for purpose "if being used sensibly". PPE is the responsibility of the employer to provide in law ( 1974 safety at work) the only provision being " where reasonably practicable ", which normally means "cost" . That doesn't mean one size fits all, and individuals needs should be taken into account. The employee should not be asked to pay either part or all of the cost.

I've tried the lightweight/ shoe type but they soon fell apart. Have now reverted to the boot type. Can highly recommend Black rock off Amazon. Not expensive but tough and can wear them all day no probs

Cheap but I find the boots (the £10.12 one) good and last around a year (gardening) before the sole cracks.

depends on your budget, always found the deWalt ones from screwfix to be not to heavy on the feet and comfy and are around £50

But only what is reasonably practicable. If the company says £25 boots are practicable and you want to pay more, then the onus is on you to pay the extra. Any good new releases lately? Bit disappointed with the 3rd Pied Piper effort.

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far. I am aware of my employer's obligation & although they try to limit to one pair per year, this isn't strictly enforced. I will now seek recompense when I decide on a pair.

Your employer cannot set how often you can have a pair per year. They have to provide them on request as long as the boots you have are no longer fit for purpose. That's the law as laid down in the 1974 Health and Safety at work act.
It really pees me off when employers start fiddling with what is the law of the land. By the way "fit for purpose" is down to the individual needs of the employee, and not necessarily the job involved !!!!

Redwings are the best IMHO. I have a new pair with an innovative ratchet, wheel tightening system instead of laces. It enables you to release them quickly if you fall into the sea.
