Signing players late in the window

Post by Inchy » Wed Aug 09, 2017 1:13 pm

Is this a good option for the best deal or a risk not worth taking. I can't figure out if it's worth the risk

PROS-
Potentially save money (although didn't feel like that with the Hendrick deal.

Know exactly what you need because you are done selling players.

CONS-
Won't be Dyche fit
Leaving the deal late means you may miss out

Do the pros outweigh the cons?

Is it worth spending a few million more to get them in early?

We don't exclusively sign players late but we did spend alot late last summer and I think we will do the same again

Good question.

We've missed out in the past, when other clubs have stopped deals happening, like Lansbury, for their own reasons, either the owners a dick or their own deals haven't happened.
Other clubs also have the same issues.

As you've rightly pointed out though the management team have a better idea of what we need by then.

The fitness question isn't an issue as much for some players at the beginning of the season, but does seem to be more so in January or players coming over from abroad.

I think Dyche would want them in asap after the season ends. I imagine he gives the board/ transfer negotiating team a lists of names and then they go get them. Can't imagine Dyche wants to sign players late to save a few million

He may not want to bring players in early if he is unsure if they are needed. He may have thought we don't need a striker but if Grey goes that will change

I think you've missed one of the main pro's for waiting till later in the transfer window - that alternative players actually become available.

The players that are available to be signed at the beginning of July and those towards the end of August will differ significantly.

If waiting means we get our number 1 target then I'm all for waiting.

Watford didn't need to wait to get their new striker in.

Everton didn't need to wait to get their new defender in.

Maybe Watford wanted to buy him in July, maybe they've had to wait more than a month to get their man, maybe you love nothing more than a good moan.

Not sure it's a straight forward pros and cons thing. All clubs would like their players in early, but equally clubs don't want to sell players until they know they're ready to let them go. Big clubs with big wallets will always be more successful at landing their targets early - that's just the way it is.

We didn't need to wait to get our new left back, central midfielder, forward, right back or third choice keeper in.

Another CON is less time to gel with the team. I'd always rather pay more early and get the player in and settled personally.

Equally you could say you wait for a player to come available because you think they will, they don't, then you are forced to spend more for your second choice. The Hendrick deal felt like that to a degree

I think every manager would like their squad assembled for the first day of pre season, even a week before the season most probably, but I'm affraid money talks.

I don't think there's a manager in the country who would be fully happy with a fully assembled squaf a week before the season.

Nearly always out of our hands.
Unless you are willing to pay over the odds for a player, then the potential selling club will hang on as long as possible, to make sure they get the best deal possible.
Even when a deal is agreed , it may be dependent on the selling club finding a replacement, or the buying club moving on one of their own.
It is what it is, and Burnley aren't the only club having to play by these rules, so not worth worrying about.

I certainly appreciate what you're saying there Inchy, there's always a risk of waiting.

I'd disagree with you on the Hendrick point though, I think it was clear he was one of our main targets throughout last summer and, albeit a tad drawn out, we got our man before the window shut.

We certainly have enough cash to splash on a wonder striker!

Wayne Rooney signed for Everton on 9 July, and Sandro signed on 3 July.

They sold Lukaku on 10th July.

I've no idea what you're talking about.

There are plenty of cons though.

There are lots of other clubs who panic about getting incomings so are prepared to pay over the odds. More clubs are in competition with each other to get players in so its harder to secure a deal. A lot of your targets may already have been taken earlier on. No time for players to blend with the others. No time for players to understand and fit in with the framework. A lot of incomings might not be thought as being starters but instead as squad cover. Players are more likely to up their wage demands knowing there are rival teams after them so they can put the squeeze on. Impacts on team morale especially if you get off to a poor start. Players may get injured in early games and may not be available for transfer. There must be questions as to why a team is willing to let a player go at the last minute. For me whilst it is possible to find a real gem the cons outweigh the pro's comprehensively.

We do appear to be floundering and my faith in Dyche and the board is slowly being eroded.

I'm one of those that think we should be sorted before the season starts not three or four games in. However the window is open for another 3 weeks and that is where the problem lies.

We must be bloody minted with the cash we haven't spent.

Hope we have at least 3 top signings ready to roll before the end of the window now André's departed.

Our team must easily be the slowest in the league now.

Watford sign Gray in less than 24 hours feels like it takes weeks to get one of our targets in.

How do you know they haven't been chasing him for weeks?

Just because you only heard about it today, doesn't mean he's only been a target since yesterday.

Barnes is mediocre, Vokes is mediocre, now we've flogged Gray.
As kick off is almost upon us and with valuable points at stake from Saturday, signing late is idiotic.
Lost Keane at a bad time too. Ideally all the preperation should be done in good time , ours looks shoddy and amateurish again.
We aren't going to lash out millions on some mystery striker, so the chance of adding to the squad is obviously there, but it will be rushed and clumsy.
We stay up, remarkably, then seem to want to model ourselves on a mid table championship set up.
