Another "Sky Sports Understands..." article. Didn't they "understand" that Dyche was going to be announced as their new manager a while ago?

Everton must have had some encouragement from Silva or his agent to go public with their approach and if he really wants to go, more often than not they end up going.

So there was no 3.5 year contract on the table for Dyche?

Don't think Everton are interested in our Sean. As Dyche has said, it's difficult for young English managers to progress in the PL. I reckon Dyche would love a crack at the Everton job and if it was offered he would be off however there's probably not much longevity to it and owners want big names or foreign managers for the overseas media coverage.

Presumed Everton really wanted Unswortb to shake it up a bit and hold the fort until end of season then sign a proper manager . SD would love a go at Everton and rightly so .

"A spokesman for Watford told Sky Sports News: "We will not countenance an approach for our manager, either from Everton or indeed any other club, be it in the Premier League or abroad."

Would be nice to hear that from our board tbh

If there's a compensation clause in his contract it would just be empty words though.

It would, but Dyche has a release clause in his contract so it’d be meaningless.

Everton’s scattergun search for a manager is harming survival chances
Paul Joyce, Northern Football Correspondent

There was a time not so long ago when Farhad Moshiri, Everton’s major shareholder, remained relatively anonymous and could simply sit back with his business associate Alisher Usmanov and pick apart Stan Kroenke’s running of Arsenal. How they must miss those days now.

This year, the pantomime season has come early for Everton. The club’s search for a new manager - a search being headed by Moshiri - is creating even more mess at a club that spent £140 million last summer only to find themselves sixth from bottom in the Premier League.

To recap, Ronald Koeman was sacked on October 23 after a two-month downturn in results in which Everton won only two matches. David Unsworth was put in charge (losing three games and winning one) until the international break, when Everton were expected to roll out the masterplan to restabilise the club.

It has become obvious, however, that when Koeman was dismissed there was no clear succession plan. The timing of Koeman’s sacking was especially ironic given that it came after a 5-2 defeat by Arsenal, the club in which Moshiri sold his shares in 2016 and bought a 49.9 per cent stake in Everton because he wanted more of a say in the running of a Premier League club.

It seems there is no coherent, joined-up strategy. So far there has been a meeting with Sam Allardyce, a courtship of Diego Simeone with a view to a summer appointment and, belatedly on Monday, a pile of money waved at Watford in the hope that they would release Marco Silva and take on the problem of finding a manager themselves. Predictably, they said no.

Silva has come round to the idea of moving to Goodison Park — just as Koeman was persuaded by Moshiri’s millions to quit Southampton in the summer of 2016 — having initially not wanted to appear disloyal and walk out on Watford after only 11 matches.

That will give Everton encouragement but, equally, Moshiri’s compensation package of about £8.5 million was hardly likely to turn heads at Watford, who cleverly did not allow Silva a break clause in his contract.

Even in the modern game, where clubs happily pay tens of millions for players but try to secure managers on the cheap, the maths did not add up.

If Silva is as good as Everton think, and don’t forget that Unsworth’s sole victory involved coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Watford, then he is the difference between staying in the top flight or not. That difference is worth in the region of £100 million and in that context, Everton’s offer can hardly be described as enticing.

That said, it also feels like the beginning of the end for Silva at Watford and perhaps it is a matter of when, and to where, he eventually moves. The Portuguese has shown that he views the club as a stepping stone and that in itself could have ramifications for their season given that early momentum has been stalled by three successive defeats.

In the meantime, Allardyce — whose presence as a candidate has polarised opinion — has grown frustrated at the lack of progress, while Burnley’s Sean Dyche knows he is at least fourth choice if the wheel of fortune ever comes spinning back in his direction.

It is hard not to feel sympathy for Unsworth, who stepped into the breach and continues to take training daily while unsure if he will be in charge for Saturday’s game at Crystal Palace — a match which feels crucial at the lower end of the table.

His hand has been weakened further by the way Everton have gone about their business and yet he could be asked to rouse a set of players who know that he is not the club’s preferred permanent manager.

Kevin Mirallas and Morgan Schneiderlin have already chosen to walk off the training pitch when challenged by the interim backroom staff over a perceived lack of effort rather than display the humility required to drag the club out of the mire.

As for the Atletico Madrid coach Simeone, goodness knows what he is thinking, but the internet spoofs that have circulated since his name was mentioned may offer a gauge.

Unless Silva agitates and Watford cave in — and there is no sign of the latter — Everton, increasingly, appear to have two options: go cap in hand to Allardyce, massage his ego and offer him a big bonus if he keeps them up, or back Unsworth.

Whatever way Moshiri goes, it is time for some clarity of thought.

Everton activity shows that they are not part of any elite off the pitch, any more than on it.

Latest from The Times, Thurs 16-Nov. No mention of Sean Dyche in this report.

Watford resist Everton’s £10m for Marco Silva

Everton’s pursuit of Marco Silva has met fresh resistance from Watford, who are digging in over the future of their Portuguese head coach.

The compensation package that Everton offered Watford on Monday would have reached £10 million but has been dismissed out of hand by the Vicarage Road club. Everton have yet to increase that offer despite renewed contact yesterday with their Premier League rivals and, while it is clear that Silva has had his head turned by the ambition of Farhad Moshiri, the major shareholder, there remain significant barriers to overcome if he is to replace Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park.

Firstly, Watford are set against losing a manager, who has only been in charge for 11 Premier League matches, given the upheaval that it would cause them. It would take a hugely improved offer for that stance to change.

Watford — as do Everton — see Silva as the means to guarantee their top-flight status, which is worth at least £100 million, and a compensation deal amounting to a tenth of that sum is not seen as being persuasive.

Against that backdrop, and Sam Allardyce’s decision to rule himself out of the running for the vacancy yesterday, it is likely that David Unsworth, the caretaker manager, will take charge of the club for Saturday’s game away to Crystal Palace. He supervised the 3-2 victory over Watford immediately before the international break.

Moshiri met with Allardyce but the former England manager said he was unimpressed by the lack of urgency in following up those talks with an offer and withdrew from the race. “It would have been a fabulous job, but it just didn’t feel right,” said Allardyce, whose link with the post had been unpopular with many Everton supporters.

“You want people to be decisive and feel like they want you. I didn’t get that feeling overall. They were hesitating that I was the man.”

Long may it continue, but I don’t quite get this obsession with Silva. He’s been over here for less than a year, during which time he’s suffered a relegation and, 11 games in, is doing a decent job at Watford. SD kept his side up last year against the odds and his side currently sits one place above Silva’s, and Dyche would come, by all reports, about £7.5m cheaper.

Everton play Crystal Palace on saturday so should they pick up 3 points, that should take some of the pressure off replacing Unsworth. If they win...

Three years ago we weren't going through brexit either. A lot changes in a long time.

“Watford — as do Everton — see Silva as the means to guarantee their top-flight status, which is worth at least £100 million, and a compensation deal amounting to a tenth of that sum is not seen as being persuasive.“

In the mean time, we have people on here who think £3.5m is enough to warn Everton off.

Now I know it’s a deal between two parties, but I can’t help feeling very disappointed that we only value SD’s retention figure at such a measly amount. Presumably, he (and his agent) had a massive influence on that figure being so low. I suppose we could have asked for the figure to be higher and for them to insist on it being so low with a view to it not scaring anyone off, but ffs £3.5m wouldn’t scare Hartlepool off!

This is far from over. I’m hoping SD is thinking along the same lines as BFS. “If ur not mithering me to sign, you can’t want me that much.”

I thought I was ok and chilled about this. Maybe I’m not after all.

I never really thought SD would head off over to Stanley Park area - it wasn't a good fit for Sean at this time, there were too many obvious negatives, no need to explain them.

It also 'looks' as if there hasn't been too much contact between the two parties anyway..?

Crucially, Sean and everyone else now know that if anything he was 4th/5th choice anyway ( Silva. BFS. Simeone. Unsworth, if he had won his matches...)

Sean Dyche isn't going anywhere just that, we can be pleased about that and press on purposely, over the next 6 busy weeks.

The gaffer, and the board have played a blinder here.

I.e. Keep the attention on the gaffer, who can handle it, and away from the players who are performing miracles !!

It's classic man management - the guy is a modern day Brian Clough !!! And I'm sure there will be lots of laughs in the boardroom at the Turf !

When the Bob Lord stand is rebuilt one day it will be named the Sean Dyche stand !! - now just imagine KBRFC sitting in that !!! :D

Palace, with Benteke back & Saha in good form, could easily upset the apple cart but 1 or 3 points for Everton will probably add to them thinking they can survive with Unsworth this year and go the "big name foreigner next season" route.
A very important game for both sides as Palace will begin to look well stranded if they lose. Difficult one to predict.

BFC's board on one side, Sean Dyche on the other, re. negotiating this contract. How much hardball do you think the Board can play? The line at which either party can say "if you don't agree to such-and-such then BFC will need a new manager" is almost 100% in favour of Dyche.

Neither Sean Dyche nor the Board of Directors are fools - they both know Dyche's worth to Burnley Football Club, and that worth is as high as any manager in the league at present IMO. I doubt any other club would find it as hard to replace their manager with one of equivalent value as we would, taking all circumstances into account. Therefore, this latest contract is written basically to Sean Dyche's specifications, because unless he got very silly (and by all accounts he hasn't), then he can't demand more than he's worth. If he has asked for £3m annual pay plus £3.5 escape clause - and of course we don't know if either of those are accurate - then he's certainly asked for no more than he is worth to BFC. The Board has nothing really to negotiate with.

I'm not suggesting the board play hardball, in fact, id rather they didn't. I'm just surprised that figure is so low. I understand that SD is in a very strong position, of course he is and rightfully so, but even if the figure is his (and his agents) I believe it's a little (and I'm struggling for the right word here, so i'll use this one) disrespectful to the club.

There are league one clubs who could easily meet that escape clause. (there is one who couldn't  ) It basically allows him to go ANYWHERE. Id think that that during negotiations we would blow as much smoke up his jacksy as we could so he absolutely totally aware of our clubs thoughts on him.

"We would like a release clause of £25m Sean, because that's how highly WE rate you. If someone else wants to speak to you, they will have to rate you at least as highly as us. And we think your next move will be to a club who will find that figure easy to deal with because you are THAT good".

Any release clause is governed by normal employment law, not football transfer law. I doubt a release clause of estimated 8 times' salary would stand up in court - employment law tends to be biased in favour of the employee.

Watford have confirmed this morning that they've turned down yet another approach from Everton for Marco Silva and have told them that they will not entertain any further offers

In that case why can't we just turn down any approach?

Can't because SD has a release clause, and Silva does not.

If I was Everton, I think I'd be looking at out of work managers now.

SD might still be tempted, but he'd know he wasn't first, second or even third choice, and that could well swing it.

Everton don't appear to have too much of a plan since sacking Koeman. Think they hoped either Big Sam would take it till the summer or results would pick up under Unsworth. These haven't happened so they turned to Silva. Still think they want a big name or a stop gap till the summer in which time they can find their big game. It's currently not an attractive proposition.

At this rate Everton will end up with an advert in the lonely hearts column of sporting life "Wealthy club owning Arab millionaire (allegedly) only current friend a jobbing actor WLTM a bright young ambitious manager to run my club. Massive salary, contract of sorts, if plans come to fruition (depending on a large enough brown envelope) the opportunity to work with a sea view. Written applications only to a country where HMRC can't issue an arrest warrant.

Is there anything stopping Silva from resigning and then taking the job at Everton?
