Busby Babes ont Turf
On this day has to be worth a look.
Some of our younger board members can have a look at the CFS and Longside when they were throbbing,

The official attendance was 37,823 but some three seasons later against Bradford City on the Turf the attendance was 52,850.
Now, that was really jammers, with still thousands locked outside.

You would have loved the smoke filled cricketfield terracing for sure it got me hooked...the Burnley fans with their collection of nicked away scarves all sewn together worn as trophies.. The flags of stoke city...Leeds utd etc the rumble of the terracing when a goal went in against the same! Picking up half crowns were a bonus on a matchday along with two bob pieces shillings and tanners....you'd have love it.and the football wasn't bad!!Colburn_Claret wrote:That was a crowd, shame I'm too young to have been there. Unless the 15,000 extra all went in the Brunshaw Rd stand, then they aren't fitting in the 3 stands that we see in the video.

Health and safety hadn't been invented in those days - talk about being crushed and
carried away from your dad without your feet touching the ground. We had to pre-arrange
a meeting point for after the game as quite regularly I didn't finish the game with my dad.

The Everton game was on a Saturday, the gate was 42,482.
BOT, I think if any of those attendances was suspect it would have to be the game in the video against United. The whole ground was rammed and remember the enclosure in front of the Brunshaw Road stand held over 4,000.

As a 13 year old youth I was there.Cant remember too much about the day though...I have a vague memory of being in the CFS and the crowd surging forwards every so often. Its a miracle people didnt get squashed against the perimeter wall or the tubular steel green painted barrier rails.Great atmosphere though at those big games.

I can remember the old cricket field stand. I was more on about that Utd game.tim_noone wrote:You would have loved the smoke filled cricketfield terracing for sure it got me hooked...the Burnley fans with their collection of nicked away scarves all sewn together worn as trophies.. I was about 4/5 when I first went on, my dad used to carry me on his shoulders. That would be 61, more likely 62. The first thing that always grabs you is the atmosphere. You couldn't help falling in love with it.
Re: Busby Babes ont Turf
The Leeds game in 73 was over 38,000 and with only three sides of the ground in use. That was the biggest attendance at the Turf for me. I'm being a spoiler here, but the Wrexham match was 26K not 36K.

The first fence went up about 76.It was a few years later when another fence appeared creating the no-mans land.
Re: Busby Babes ont Turf
To add to my post above;I vividly remember the Derby County game in 76 when it kicked off on the longside with no fencing. It must have been shortly after that or during the close season that the first fence was erected.

That Derby County rumble I refer to could have been 75 which, having just checked, was just a few weeks before that spurs match.

The Leeds and Derby matches stick out in my mind. Leeds because I couldn't see the game, I was stuck at the top of the stairs in between the Longside and Bee Hole end. And Derby for Burnley fans singing Derby's surrounded.

Thanks for posting, excellent footage. Must be honest, looked more than 36k on. Largest official attendance for a game I attended was 40,265 v Man Utd on 4th Feb 1967 (just before the summer of love). The score was 1-1 with a last minute equaliser from a Gordon Harris penalty. After that I witnessed some of the worst violence I have seen inside TM.

The last 50K plus attendance at the Turf was Everton in the FA Cup six years earlier in the 5th round. We won that one 3-1.piston broke wrote:The Everton FACup tie in Jan'67 was 48k. That's my biggest and I wish we'd lost. The bastards broke Willie Irvine's leg in the replay.
Re: Busby Babes ont Turf
Re the 54775 record attendance on the Turf. If more had turned up to the game, or any game, they would have been allowed on. In 1936 we played the then mighty ( which they were) Arsenal in a cup tie. A crowd of 60,000 was expected, but sadly it didn't happen.

UTB, they are not all that tightly packed in. When the Turf really was full, all that could be seen was heads and no bodies more or less. On that vid one can clearly see the folk standing. I'm still not convinced. I'm open to change my opinion, though.
Houseboy, the Huddersfield attendance of 54K was for a cup tie and not a league attendance record.
