On the way back from Aberdeen going to make a weekend of it. And go camping somewhere closeby or on the way back down.

Not done Cairngiorms so that may be the best bet. But open to other suggestions. Will have two nephews with us (9 and 11). Ideally want to be close to Mountains or Coast. Dramatic views and plenty to do.

Camped at Kinlochleven last year on the way to Skye and loved it but thats the wrong side.

Got some excellent tips on here for Skye last year.

We’ve used one at Braemar. Braemar Caravan Park on the side of the A93. It does camping and has pods also.
Handy for Balmoral, follow the Dee up river takes you to the back of the Cairngorms and Munros galore around the Glenshee ski centre(I did 10 over two days)

Cairngorm National Park and lift up, gives fantastic views. Inverness and Moray Firth over the Keswick Bridge to the Black Isle is a super coastal trip from Aberdeen.

Whisky trail in that Cairngorm area and South of Aberdeen, the National Trust of Scotland has some fantastic castles to see. Family membership, very reasonable and then all free.

If you go Cairngorm, then back to the A9, halfway between Aviemore and Kingussie is the Highland Wildlife Park. That's where the new Polar bear cub resides, with mum and dad.

Galloway forest is nice probably too much of a swing westwards hitting the M6 at Carlisle not a bad run with stopoffs at the lakes.

Take plenty of insect repellent. They get vicious north of the border.
It's worth it mind, I love Scotland.

Stop at the Bannockburn Visitor centre. An excellent interactive display including an electronic 'fight your own battle' at the end. Went a few times when i lived in Edinburgh and enjoyed it each time. Our Nephews loved it.

The midges can easily ruin your trip - they’re awful in the highlands in July - Aug. You might be best sticking to the east coast. Less scenic but not eaten alive.

I dropped my daughter off in Inverness last Sunday. Never been that far north before but have to say it was stunning. There were still pockets of snow on the tops in the cairngorms which surprised me.
Mind It did seem like it was snowing on the way home but it was the dreaded midges in the headlights.

Aware of the midgey problems. Thats why we ended up doing Skye in Autumn over Summer last year.

We went up Scotland in a Motorhome last year for a week up the West Coast. No Midgies at all on the coast I presume for the sea/salt air but when we stayed next to one of the Lochs to wake up to the perfect view we got swamped with them.
Our guard had been let down with a few days in and around Ayr but the other over nighters had bee keeping hats on job lot.

Went and bought every spray known to man but no problem in Inverness next to the canal.
