What does it mean
For England to win tomorrow?
To the nation. How important is it?
After the success of the olympics in 2012, there was a decent legacy left behind. Will this have the same affect on future fans and players? Will other nations look at our model and all of a sudden its us rather than spain or germany that teams look to emulate?
Euro 96 semi final was something else. And I still remember the dejection I felt after the result. Remember going out in the back garden with my dad absolutely gutted at what had happened. Never for a minute though thought another semi final would be 22 years away.
I remember bits of Italia 90. And remember having the white kit, the red kit and my brother and I having both keeper kits too. And I remember it being one of the first big reasons I was so mad about football. Both obsessed.
I assume it will have other massive benefits for the economy and the country as a whole.
What will it mean to you personally?
Having been to the last few tournaments, and having tickets all the way to the final in 2016 had we got there - the way in which we went out and the lack of passion or care from the players meant I completely had all passion and interest knocked out of me. Unable to relate to or even respect the players. (That along with the complete lacknof passion or atmosphere at games, especially wembley) I cancelled my membership. But I will now be gutted not to be there. And this tournament and Southgate have been great. its reignited some passion and pride. And I think future players will think twice about pulling out of squads. Southgates got them to play for the shirt again.
Regardless of tomorrow the future is bright. We have 11 players in this squad who could feasibly play in 2 more world cups!

Re: What does it mean
What is quite bizarre is seeing the iconic clips from England’s defeat to Germany in 1990 (Gazza crying etc) and realising that tomorrow’s game is of that magnitude and potentially will eclipse that.
Edit - I know that doesn’t answer your question but it’s something I’ve been pondering.

Personally don’t give a S**t 1 way or the other, obviously I’d prefer progression into the final, but won’t be searching for the razor blades if the worst was to happen they’d be no major hangover. I’m looking forward more to domestic football after the WC less media hype.

Re: What does it mean
In the short-term it will obviously give a major boost to the national team, hopefully this success will show that the system of developing players at St George's,and bringing many of the squad through the various age groups together can yield results, this would justify the large outlay on the project.
Even if football doesn't come home this year the future for the England team is brighter then for many decades, most of the current squad will be around for the next few tournaments, and the conveyor belt from the under 17's and above should enhance Gareth's options.

Re: What does it mean
IMO it's massive, this can inspire a generation - it has already to an extent and galvanised people.
But seriously, could be astronomical - it will install positive unity and national pride that we haven't had in a long, long time - it's much needed.
People need a release from mundane or challenging lives, this can provide it and allow people to dream or believe.
This may all sound a bit pie in the sky - but i genuinely believe it could be this important.

Re: What does it mean
Dunno to be honest
I was 17 in 1990, and I was absolutely gutted
I'm 45 now, and though I still love football as much, I'm also aware that it isn't the end of the world when it doesn't go well.
If we win, it will be absolutely amazing, but on the Monday morning, work will still have to be done and the kids still have to go to school.
I can't help thinking that a certain group of people in this country are hoping for a win to push through stuff that is clearly going to be bad while everyone is celebrating.
And pride in the nation? Our nation is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Three parts of that will be supported anyone but England, and fair play to them for that!

Re: What does it mean
Nah, like the London 2012 Olympics were meant to inspire a generation it won't have much effect, especially as we've got too many political problems at the moment.CoolClaret wrote:IMO it's massive, this can inspire a generation - it has already to an extent and galvanised people.

Re: What does it mean
Exactly in 2012 we were the most global we have ever been, the best olympics, global UK at its finest and no hint that we couldn't do anything because we were in the EU, the single market and the customs union.
Four years later......
Four years later......
Re: What does it mean
For me, it's the biggest, single football match since we played Sheffield United in the play off final 2009.

Bigger than our pre-season friendly against Bradford a couple of seasons ago? You’re not a real Burnley fan.Diesel wrote:For me, it's the biggest, single football match since we played Sheffield United in the play off final 2009.
Re: What does it mean
I personally think its massive.
it will change the mood of the nation well England at least.
The Scottish will call for another referendum, and not qualify.
The Welsh will return to burning down holiday cottages.
The Irish will be happy in the North, and bitter and drunk down the South, blaming every English man for there ills, unless he's called Mick Mccarthy..

Re: What does it mean
Friendlies don't really mean anything they are just to build up fitness levels before the start of the league campaign. I am real, I've just hit my knee cap with a hammer to see and it really hurt.Rileybobs wrote:Bigger than our pre-season friendly against Bradford a couple of seasons ago? Re: What does it mean
I have been a Burnley fan all my life and so have generations of my family The likes of my mother and my wife my daughters my in laws my nieces and nephews etc want BFC to win but it ends just about there,, the real passion for BFC is reserved mainly for me my brother and my son.
Tonight is different though, I will be watching this game with all the people mentioned above and they will be just as passionate about the outcome as me,, and too me that is what makes tonight so special win or lose.
COME ON ENGLAND !

The world won't stop turning if we go out. None of us will be any richer or poorer as a result (unless you've placed the Mother of all bets!) and Burnley FC will still be more important to most, if not all of us on here... having said all of that...
COME ON ENGLAND!

To be honest, I think we've done nothing new to emulate but followed Germany by clearing out the old guard and getting the youngsters in.cricketfieldclarets wrote:For England to win tomorrow?

This WC was obviously a tournament too early and we have massively exceeded expectations. Let's see if we crack on like the Germans did
