Former Ipswich striker Trevor Whymark dies at 74 after a battle with Alzheimers.

I remember thinking he was really underrated and should have had more that just one substitute appearance for England.

Remember Whymark being part of that quality Ipswich team from the late 70s managed by Bobby Robson.
With Mills , Beattie , Butcher , Osman , Wark , Muhren , Thjsen , Gates , Brazil & Mariner , good side to watch.

How weird because when I saw the "Mick Mills" thread earlier in the week I assumed the worst and was pleased to see he was actually ok. Now it turns out sadly it's Whymark who has passed away. He was was in the same team and was a very, very good player.

Being 58 years old my memory is not like it was but I vaguely remember Trevor Whymark scoring the winner for Ipswich in the season we went back down to Division 2. I also seem to remember us wearing the home kit with the 'v' on the front.
I am sure one of you will either concur or correct me.

Really sad. He was a damn good player, mainly partnering David Johnson but latterly the late, great Paul Mariner too. He played in my first Burnley game, the 3-2 defeat at Portman Rd in 1973. He was great in the air, so sadly the cause of his death is not a surprise.

Wasn't aware, until recently, that the ex-Forest and Liverpool midfielder Peter Cormack had passed away with ''Dementia Complications"
He was 78.

.....the undoubted highlight of the (1973-74 UEFA Cup) campaign was the first leg 4–0 victory over Italian team Lazio where Whymark scored all four goals.

Before the return match he was presented with a trophy from some AS Roma supporters and this infuriated the volatile Lazio fans ensuring the second leg in Italy was played in a hostile atmosphere. In a 2007 interview Whymark stated he had left the pitch carrying an iron bar for protection.

A very good player & I saw him score against us at Portman Road in 1974 and twice in 1977 to knock Burnley out of the League Cup at Turf Moor.

Living in East Anglia for most of the seventies I saw a lot of Ipswich including a game when Whymark put four past Roger Osbourne in a 7 - 0 win.

As others have mentioned Ipswich were a fine team from the mid seventies through to the eighties and were side mainly built on home grown talent. They were not only a force to be reckoned with in England but throughout Europe with many deep runs the secondary competitions mainly in the UEFA Cup which they regularly qualified for and flew the flag for the town clubs.

It seems unbelievable now but they knocked out Real Madrid and beat Barcelona twice in home legs and just goes to show how finances have made the odds tilt so heavily in favour of the big city clubs across the continent.

They were the stand out team in the 80/81 season and should have won the league, but injuries and fatigue took their toll and they faltered right at the end….like us in 61/62 when they pipped us. Given how Villa did in the European Cup in 81/82, who knows what they could have achieved.
