Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
Trafford 6 - not troubled (again)
Roberts 6 - nice movement, lacks that extra yard of pace
CJ 7 - sound again
Esteve 8* - dominant
Pires 7 - really should have 2 assists in 2 games
Cullen 6 - forward passing a bit off
Brownhill 5 - second touch a tackle at the min
Anthony 6 - decision making is soooo frustrating
Sarmiento 6 - nice bits but very wasteful in key areas
Koleosho 5 - needs a rest
Flemming 5 - needs to drop into a slightly deeper role
Agyei 6 - lively and neat
Other subs - real desire and determination, especially Hannibal, which was great to see
A rather tired performance but still deserved winners. Obv we need a striker. We put some decent balls in today and it’s so annoying seeing no one take a gamble on them. Pires’ cross across the 6 yard box first half simply had to be tapped in.

Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
Trafford - 6
Robert -6 - his off-the-ball stuff is a concern.
Esteve - 8 - superb goal-line clearance.
CJER - 7
Pires - 6
Cullen - 6 - silly yellow
Brownhill - 5 - way too negative. Should be running these games and isn't.
Anthony - 6 - one good effort first half
Sarmiento - 7
Koleosho -5
Flemming - 5 - free header 1st half and has to score
Agyei - 6
Another soporific. It's real difficult to watch. I'm delighted we've won - I didn't see it happening though.
It's yet another clean sheet. The best defence in the division. We're in touch at the top despite not playing well. There are some positives.
However, if 80% of the training sessions have been focused on attacking, I'm highly concerned. We look toothless and I'm not seeing improvement.
A big 2 weeks coming up.

Trafford 6
Roberts 6
CJER 8
Esteve 8
Pires 6 (Lurches between a 9 and a 2 within seconds this guy! Weird player!)
Cullen 6 (Seriously hampered somewhat yet again by a relatively early booking unfortunately)
Brownhill 6
Sarmiento 7 (miles, miles better second half after wasting a shirt for the first 45 minutes!)
Anthony 6 (He really is trying so hard, but he just isn't great)
Koleosho 5
Flemming 5 (I believe he's a really, really good player, but he's largely hopeless in the position/role he's currently playing)
Humphreys 7 (Made a noticeable difference)
Ageiyi 4
Jay 5 (+1 for excellent penalty under real pressure)
It's so easy to let the glow of a 94th minute winner influence the scores, but we have to put that aside. Until we got the pen we'd been very poor, especially when you have to bear in mind we believe we're serious promotion contenders. Swansea weren't rubbish, but they really weren't great either and genuine promotion contenders should be comfortably easing them aside, especially at home. On the plus side our two CBs are absolutely brilliant, but our play in midfield and up front is so slow, ponderous and predictable and we so often choose the wrong option at the vital moment. Currently we're better than the average, but we never look like attaining top two. Games like today will continue the "crowd drain" and do nothing for the atmosphere.
Just as an aside I thought it was interesting that personally I felt Vigeroux inspired more confidence than Trafford, especially with the ball at his feet and his kicking was very good and very positive

Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
From TV.
Trafford - 6 - Solid goalkeeping, no major saves to make, mostly good distribution.
Roberts - 7 - Defensively a little suspect but appeared in attack to some effect.
Egan-Riley - 8 - Another reliable performance from our new star. Even had a header at a corner.
Esteve - 9 - MoM - Gains an extra point for the goal line clearance. Good reliable work. Our two centre backs look real quality. Pathetic attempt to get a penalty but well done for being up there!
Pires - 6 - Defensively a bit sloppy but he livens up our attack. Not sure why he was subbed but perhaps a more defensive performer was required latterly and Humphreys offered that.
Sarmiento - 7 - Not as effective as at WBA and seemed to play more in the middle then on the right. Nevertheless gave us some creativity but limited goal threat.
Cullen 7 - Another better game with more attacking intent and defensive support.
Brownhill - 7 - I thought his work was more effective today, linking play and defending.
Anthony - 7 - Some good work defensively and in attack but his shooting needs more practice, both when and how.
Flemming - 6 - Worked tirelessly and actually had a header at goal where I thought he might do better.
Koleosho - 5 - Better today but loses a point for both a poor pass and lack of understanding of his team duties that led to Swansea’s best chance and Esteve’s clearance. Had quite a good shot that should have been better.
Subs:
Humphreys - 7 -Looked good defensively and contributed to attack. I see progress here.
Agyie - 6 - Whilst he didn’t offer much you can see something there.
Not on long enough but both and Hannibal and Laurent offered some urgency and as for Jay, to put that penalty away after their gamesmanship took some doing.
Swansea are another solid Championship side and with our inability to score, in theory it was no surprise that this game had 0-0 all over it. They are the lowest goal scorers and have the fifth best defence. Yet this was an entertaining match - as was the WBA one. Whilst they had the best chance and created two or three other reasonable chances we created quite a lot of opportunities ourselves. Unfortunately wrong choices, poor shooting and inaccurate headers meant we didn’t really look like scoring. We got the lucky this time with what seemed to be a dubious penalty (I couldn’t see on Sky+ why it was given but read it was for a handball from close range). Jay did the honours.
A deserved win on the balance of play but we shouldn’t get carried away. Whilst we have made good progress over the last two games against solid opposition we need to find a way to put those chances away. There is no-one in the side that looks remotely like they can make the right choices as to when to shoot AND actually put in a good shot.
A work in progress but the performance gives cause for optimism that better is to come.
A word on Vigouroux. He looked very solid, as he has done when I’ve seen him on TV. His only error was the fumble from a cross that the ref gave a free kick for - he got lucky there.
And Tymon. What a horrible piece of **** this player is. He’s actually a good player but every little touch and he goes down. I’ve seen him before and he always does this. Worse then any player I can think of (actually there is Madison) and all that is wrong with today’s game.

Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
Trafford 6 - maybe could have been slightly quicker off his line early in the first half but dealt with it. Otherwise not a lot to do and distribution ok.
Roberts 7 - a busy performance with some good overlapping and a couple of good balls. On the receiving end of a bad tackle that should have been a red, glad he's OK.
Egan-Riley 8 - some of his passing was sublime, particularly in the first half. Unlucky with the header which Vigoroux made a great save from. Steady defensively.
Esteve 8* - dominant throughout. Should gave stayed on his feet rather than go for the penalty but good otherwise.
Lucid Pires 6 - a little put of position at times defensively but worked back and stuck at it. One excellent cross in the first half which maybe should have lead to a goal.
Anthony 5 - saw a lot of the ball and an excellent shot in the first half but his final ball wasn't good enough often enough unfortunately.
Brownhill 8 - he was everywhere today, broke up the play regularly and used the ball well generally. Probably should have scored from Lucas-Pires' cross in the first half.
Cullen 7 - a busy, hard working performance and looked to move the ball forwards when possible. A little careless with the foul that could maybe have been a second yellow.
Sarmiento 5 - got in some excellent positions but as with Nahtony was very wasteful. Questionable decision making at times also, but clearly a talented player. Hopefully we can help him make it 'click'.
Koleosho 5 - looked threatening but another attacking player to make poor decisions and lack the required execution in the final third.
Flemmming 5 - should have scored his chance early and the game might have been different thereafter. Did just about ok otherwise.
Subs all did ok, but a special mention to Hannibal whose appetite to win . Early days for Agyei, but he needs the support of the fans. It may be a bit early but we don't have a lot of wide options.
Swansea were difficult to play against at times as they clearly wanted to slow the game down but on the whole a deserved 3 points. Some better decision making and execution in the final third and this could have been more comfortable, but hopefully that will come. The last couple.of games have seen us play with much more attacking intent. Far less keeping the ball for the sake of it, but still plenty of room for improvement.

The late penalty papers over the massive chasm of problems we have. The back line have really found their feet and CJ was imperious today and his passing was absolute top draw. Our midfielders need to watch him because they can’t even pass a 5 yard ball to each other. Brownhill and Cullen are currently stealing a living.

I want to see Hannibal start. Looks to me to be the best technician in our midfield room and loves to drive forward with the ball.

Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
Trafford 7 very assured, good distro, another clean sheet
Roberts 6 quiet game today
Esteve 9 - reminds me of a young Gary Cahill. Top player
Egan-Riley 8 - as good as Steve for me, gave Steve 1 more for the goal line
Pires 6 still a bit unsure on him, good going forward at times
Cullen 6 needs a rest, start Laurant
Brownhill 6 nearly cost us a goal, anonymous other than that
Koleosho 5 2nd poorest performance in our team today, change him out
Anthony 6 ike him, always looks to be positive.
Sarmiento 7, great performance for me, good running with the ball
Flemming 4, not a striker, we keep playing him as one. Unfortunately we've nobody else to play the role but jeez he's miles off
Agyei 5, don't see it
Humphrey 7

Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
Trafford 6 - not much to do but distribution off.
Roberts 6 - takes too many touches for this level. Needs to regain his sharpness.
Egan Riley 8 - another sold CJ performance.
Esteve 9 - imperious and even tried to drive the team on in a period where the front lot couldn’t pass water. The rightful captain.
Pires 7 - looked to make things happen
Brownhill 4 - shouldn’t be in the team currently. Passing off, not closing down and offering nothing going forwards.
Cullen 5 - safe passing all the time. A shadow of the previous championship Cullen.
Sarmiento 6 - looked lively but faded badly in the second half. Quite why he was trying to take the leather off the ball with those shots is beyond me.
Anthony 6 - Simple passes not coming off and won’t take his man on. I think he’d be better suited to playing up front currently.
Koleosho 5 - The lad looks knackered and time and time again chooses the wrong option. Give the kid a rest, Parker.
Flemming 5 - is not a number 9 and it shows, added to this he’s getting frustrated and not doing the simple things well

Dull and predictable. We look quite toothless. Glad for a win though and defence looks good.
Trafford 6
Roberts 7
Egan-Riley 8 some great long passes. Will be hard to dislodge.
Esteve 8 solid. Great clearance and great forward run 2nd half.

It really is a proper tough watch at the moment and we were fortunate to get the three points. Hopefully we can take confidence from that and work on our attacking play a bit more during the international break.

I think you could arguably mark what I did last time, my only suggestions are Koleosho needs to be dropped and Flemming needs to play in his actual position.

Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
Trafford 6 Nothing really to do, distribution the usual mixed bag. Why we persist with fannying about with the goal kicks I do not know. Mix it up, so predictable.
Roberts 6 Ok got away with another elbow to a Swansea players face.
Egan Riley 7 Good distribution, liking what I see from him.
Esteve 7 Consistent and a class act, great goaline clearance.
Pires 6 Decent, ran out of legs second half.
Brownhill 6 Does what he does, not his best game, but sound enough.
Cullen 6 Ditto for Cullen, although lucky to have stayed on.
Sarmiento 7* do really well, pressed and hassled, looked to create and go forward
Anthony 6 Decent needs to mix it up, too many times went inside, couple of good efforts on goal.
Koleosho 5 Running down blind alleys too many times, frustrating as he has pace, we could go over the top and use is pace(we don’t) another who could outside, but comes inside all the time
Flemming 5 Not a 9 ( yet to see what the fuss is about him as footballer full stop)
Agyei 6
Humphreys 6
A wins a win,a dodgy decision went our way, we are fourth, clean sheets a plenty, but jeez it’s a hard watch.

Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
From tv
Trafford 6 minus one for his usual poor kicking
Roberts 7 got through a lot of work
ER 7 shame he’s not a couple of inches taller
Esteve 8 looks like a PL player
Pires 7 better going forward than our wingers
Anthony 6 more involved today but he’s still a slow Koleosho
Cullen 6 no cutting edge
Brownhill 6 worked hard but to no effect
Koleosho 5 I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Burnley player give the ball away so much, plenty of effort though
Saramiento 7 some good energy and some nice touches
Flemming 6 stop playing him in his wrong position
Humphreys 7 did well when he came on
Agyei 6 a very raw talent
A late goal gave us the three points and saved Parker some blushes and criticism. I still don’t see us gelling into a cohesive style of play at all. Defence is absolutely fine for the Championship but our ball retention and final ball is poor going forward. We need to play two up front (I understand we don’t have the personnel at the moment) and put more pressure on opposition defences. I really hope Parker develops a successful style of play for the team, otherwise he is going to come under pressure.

Trafford 6- nothing to do again 6
Roberts 6 decent movement but lacks pace , Humphries needs to start over the foul tempered Boyo imo
Egan-Riley 7- another good show from the classy looking CJ
Esteve -7 -best CB partnership with CH and switched on , and pushed up a bit late.
Lucas Pires 6- middling we need better, though rarely tested is he even fit ?
Cullen 6- busy but seems almost as slow as Jack Cork , lucky to stay on
Brownhill 6 grafted but a little blunt , doesn’t look happy ( but he’s not dopey either )
Koleosho 6- lively, dangerous full effort , but poor final balls and loses possession like he’s had 10 pints.
Anthony 6- quality but drifts out too easily,
Sarmiento 7- decent touches and is starting to gel
Flemming 5- an average champ player who’se no centre forward
Humphries- best ive seen him needs to start 7
Jay -7 +1 for the sweet pen
Agyei- not sure he’s good enough but raw 5
Hannibal 6 - real battler but appears mentally unhinged at times

Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
I wasn't able to make it today, and missed the first 10 minutes on the telly so I won't rate, but some thoughts based on the 85+ minutes of football I did see.
I thought for an hour we were basically OK, with a couple of caveats. The shape with Sarmiento an extra attack minded player is certainly better, and I thought Roberts and Pires added plenty of energy to our attack. Pires produced two glorious balls in the first half which Brownhill (made no contact with a perfect low pass across the 6 yard box) and Flemming (headed wide from a terrific corner) should have scored from. We probably should have been ahead on the balance of the first hour.
The two caveats are these. Firstly, it is increasingly apparent Flemming is not a number 9. The theory is plausible but it just isn't working, probably because he doesn't quite have the pace to lead the line unless the team is playing very high and so we have lots of runners around him, which isn't the case. He's also not attacking the ball in the box like a 9 and as a result he's not occupying defenders. I suspect he'd be happier attacking the ball from a bit deeper. The second caveat is that certain players, most obviously Koleosho, are trying too hard. I actually thought Luca did OK for an hour - he committed defenders, and he worked well with Pires. But as the second half went on he tried to do more and more himself and became more frustrated, and frustrating, as a result.
The really odd thing today though was the changes. We were crying out for a real out and out striker to occupy the centre halves and stretch the game whilst keeping that 3 behind the striker. Given he started at Millwall, the first change seemed obvious: Hountondji for any of the 3 behind Flemming, Flemming into his natural position and something closer to a 4-4-2. The other logical change would have been Hannibal (given his range of passing) for Cullen, who was excellent for 45 minutes and then completely neutralised by his inability to risk giving away the foul that would have seen him sent off after his lucky escape in first half injury time.
Instead, he firstly took off a natural left back who was doing well and brought on a left sided centre half out of position (Parker's own description), and left Flemming as the lone striker when it clearly wasn't working, and then replaced Flemming with Jay (OK) but then withdrew an attacker to end the game with essentially 3 box to box midfielders, none of whom are especially creative. Hannibal took the advanced position again but was no more effective in that role than he's been all season.
Perhaps Parker will say it worked because Rodriguez and Humphrys combined for the goal, but it was a pretty speculative (and delayed) cross into the box that would have come to nothing without a fortuitous deflection and generous decision. As the second half wore on we became less cohesive as an attacking force and more reliant on some form of individual brilliance.
Other than that - as you were. Esteve magnificent, Egan Riley fine (although we need to use that booming switch more - it's a weapon), Cullen good until treading on egg-shells, Sarmiento and Anthony were bright but ulitmately a bit toothless, Brownhill showed plenty of energy but he's another to be forcing it. Another game in which Trafford could have brought the crossword - in all this frustration, this defensive record is really impressive.
Re: Burnley v Swansea - Player Ratings
Any consideration given to playing 3 games in 8 days including trips to south London and WBA? Maybe Pires was subbed as he was tired Spice?
