“SPOT ON” - Tonight’s new half-time ‘entertainment’
I will stand corrected on all of this and I’m very keen to hear what other people have to say on this.
First of all, I’ve seen this game used before and it’s a nice idea, so no issues with the concept and it being used as half-time entertainment. It involves a football at least!
The circular sheeting was placed in the centre circle and three or four ball assistants stood around the circle to later retrieve the balls after they had been kicked (to a stop) by the contestants. There was also someone stood with a measuring implement of some sort.
Four contestants kicked the ball towards the centre spot from the 6 yard line, each trying to be the closest person to the centre spot.
None of the four landed their ball on the circular sheeting. However, contestant number one, Oscar, was declared the winner… now this is when it gets complicated….
Oscar was the first person to play and he over-hit his ball. As it ran through the sheeting, over the halfway line and out of the other side of the circle, his ball was clearly stopped by one of the assistants.
How can Oscar be declared the winner, when his ball was still rolling towards the Cricket Field stand?
As far as I saw, not one of the balls was measured because they were all retrieved by ball assistants very quickly.
There was a lot of headshaking and then Russell Ball ran to the halfway line to have a discussion. He then proceeded to go back to the contestants, where he declared that Oscar had won, what is in fairness was a very nice prize.
But from where I was looking from, it literally looked like they’d messed up and just tried to remember who might’ve had the closest ball….well yes, it was Oscar, because his ball had been physically stopped on the edge of the circle!
Did anyone else see this?

I didn’t see it because it took literally the whole of half time to get served in the Jimmy Mac lower, which was a new low for the catering service in that stand.
But that’s probably for another thread.

Not sure if the chap sat next to me was a friend or family member of one of the other contestants but he was incandescent. He was shouting about how Russell Ball would have hell to pay for it.
Very strange

Try and find out a little bit more from him on Tuesday. I’m really intrigued by it. I can just imagine it, and I don't even know who the angry fellow was.
Tough conditions tonight but I reckon I could do it.
What I thought was odd, was someone lining up to take a £500 pass to the half way line and Mr Shouty came on with a countdown, before they were even ready!!!
Whilst on Mr Shouty.... he did his "we are moments away from kick off, so let's hear it for Burrrrnlllleeeeeeeeeey" speech and it really bugs me.

Second half performance was nowhere near as good as the first.

Why did they have to stand in the corner then go over to the 6yd box to take the kick?
Why not have them stood at the 6yd box before hand?

It’s like somebody had thought of the game minutes before they went out, with no plan as to how any of it would work out.
What a shambles.

Re: “SPOT ON” - Tonight’s new half-time ‘entertainment’
Agree. I’m curious as to whether anyone saw what I saw or did actually see any measuring?
For me, the guy that kicked second probably should have won! The last two were way overhit and way underhit.

There was no measuring. Two of the attempts were stopped by the people stood in the middle so as you say, would have been impossible to measure.

Re: “SPOT ON” - Tonight’s new half-time ‘entertainment’
I like the idea that the prize pot grows every time it is not won, so £1000 next time I think. The thing is, I think it will be a miracle if anyone can make the ball stop in the small red circle in the centre of the plastic sheet. The chances of doing it with just one attempt and no practice makes it virtually impossible.

Yes, it rolls over, so the prize pot should be £1000 v Derby.

I thought it just had to stop on the sheeting to be a winner. Obviously if more than one then the nearest to the centre wins.

Yup, and I’d also say it needs sorting as to who won! I genuinely think, going off how it ended, they had a quick chat, realised they’d messed it up and called a winner based on what ‘they thought they saw’.

Re: “SPOT ON” - Tonight’s new half-time ‘entertainment’
But if they declared a winner last night… what will roll over?
Also, if the game is nearest wins? There should be a winner every time surely? One will always be nearest.
Sounds like they wrote the rules on a fag packet, but then someone threw it away!

Re: “SPOT ON” - Tonight’s new half-time ‘entertainment’
The winner Is the nearest out of four contestants to the centre spot. The prize for winning apparently varies each game and last night, the prize was two hospitality tickets for a forthcoming game. The £500 Is the bonus prize and goes to anyone who lands the ball on the centre spot. That therefore rolls over.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2024 10:57 amBut if they declared a winner last night… what will roll over?

Re: “SPOT ON” - Tonight’s new half-time ‘entertainment’
The last guy to shoot had carefully assessed the others overshooting. He hit the ball along the ground but failed to take surface water into account. He was immediately criticised by "shouting man" who asked him " what was that, it was more of a pass". Nevertheless, from where I stood, the last kicker was nearest!
They need VAR for this serious competition to move forward.

I wonder if this will just go away quietly without a proper and fair resolution. I stand to be corrected but I’m not sure how you can judge a winner when some balls were clearly stopped in motion, including that of the designated winner.

Re: “SPOT ON” - Tonight’s new half-time ‘entertainment’
The format requires some adjustment.
Take the kick from anywhere on the pitch.with the intention that you will strike a supporter anywhere in the stands.
If any fan is struck by the ball it results in a £100 fine but there those turncoats who are willing to seek the major prize at all costs without any consideration of the other participants.cc
I think that we may have a rollover on Tuesday depending on the club and outside departmental agencies making a decision as to what they are considering my rash and Ill thought out proposals.
The unfortunate winner gets to load the players kit onto their executive coaches and then takes them on a Smorgasbord of local attractions, these may include Towneley Hall (Closed for the season with suggestions of refurbishment, natural collapse or planned demolition have been appearing in all manner of unsubstantiated worldwide articles including sections in The Times, that paper that people leave on train seats if they haven't used it to wipe their arses earlier due to the usual congestion in the WC facilities).
I recently embarked on a short local hop on the rail service but Immediately realised that I had the onset of acute.travel sickness, particularly in my bowel area.
Whilst trying to relax the motions I pictured in my mind those old fashioned chairs at school. That's what was hopefully the outcome of my lower intestine and other

Re: “SPOT ON” - Tonight’s new half-time ‘entertainment’
The best half time game of skill I have seen was at the old Ninian Park where they used to have “On me shed son!” They had a sponsor, could have been Wickes who paid out £500 I think for any contestant who could land a ball to hit the roof of the shed which was placed on the centre spot from the six yard box.
It was very entertaining and got a lot of crowd participation. I’m sure many on here will have seen it who went to watch the clarets at the old Ninian.

Nah. I’m learning to realise that worrying about the football is way too much. I worry about my club’s financial future: I have for a few years. Worrying can be saved for family, friends, pets, health. I’ve done enough of it.
The aforementioned remark isn’t worry; it’s more comedic apathy towards a truly awfully organised event. The concept is good, but those running it appear utterly clueless.
