Best chippy East Lancs area

Post by ChrisG » Tue Jun 24, 2025 8:02 am

Morning all,

I'm back in the UK for a few weeks soon, stopping with my mother who lives in Barlick to help her recuperation from surgery.

I am very much looking forward to fish, chips, sausage and gravy with a pie side, therefore I need recommendations as to the best chippy in the area...

I believe it's called a circular economy nowadays.

I always enjoy Park View. Just stay away from Belfields, that hasn't been good since about 2006.

That looks exactly what I'm after.

Just spotted Bertwistles round the corner on Google Maps too, they used to do a belting loose potato pie with red cabbage

Used to make my own on the Scillies...due to lack of other options.

Grew my own spuds, caught my own cod/pollock and liberated a fryer from a worker at the tip.

Proper good scran every time.

Definetely not Bannys in Colne. Has really gone downhill. Holts in Nelson is still supposed to be good and always looks busy.

If you’re in Barlick get over to Skipton. Westmoreland Street considered the best. Opening hours need to be checked since cater for locals. Then there’s Bizzy Lizzys which are very good too and Newmarket Street. Bit spoilt in Skipton.

I've not been to Banny's in Colne for some time. The Burnley drive-through is decent, in my opinion.
They have an increasingly eclectic menu, more like a takeaway that does fish and chips also. The tikka fish is excellent, and worth a look - unless you're a tradionalist.

I dont mind bannys drive thru, decent enough.

Birds in rose grove is ok, but cash only. (Do homemade pies if that's up your street)

Rosegrove chippy good too.

Used to visit Holts frequently during winter months pre and post covid. Been disappointed in the fish&chips from Holts on the last couple of occasions though. Went last week when in UK. The seems new owners have changed something in the quality or process. The chips are more ‘soggy’ and seem under-fried and the batter is far less crisper.

As above, nothing could get near holts 18 months ago when the original owner had it. Lovely food, very efficient staff. Travelled over from Burnley regularly as nothing in Burnley/Padiham came close.

Sadly, it’s way off what it used to be. People were queueing down the street for a reason. If ever there was a performance indicator worth noting, that was it. “Oh, I know - I’ll change things”. Well done fella, nailed it.

Rosegrove is OK, and not tried Birds for some time so maybe it’s worth another look. Struggled to enjoy Eddie Gills and Pendle St in Padiham… maybe Holts set the bar too high.

As mentioned earlier, Bertwhistles loose pie and sandwiches are most excellent.

Was going to mention Kelbrook Fisheries....but an online search tells me that its permanently closed 😞

For humour value though, The Cods Pollocks near Accy has got to be worth a visit.

Also, I always enjoyed The Bridge Chippy in Barrowford when I lived there.

Another support for Eddie Gills. He makes his own pies too and they are very good plus his various sized Sausages (oooer).

Birds is also very good for plate pies.

Showing my age now but I used to frequent the chippy near the park (Park View chippy I think) when I was a lad living in Higherford. Was ace!

Not been for a while but good to see it still stacks up.

I’m often cautious where they do other stuff (Chinese) but Whaley was always excellent.

Oh - the one at Hollingworth lake is also excellent. Especially their battered tiger prawns. Could eat them now!

The Friary does do Chinese and other bits, in fact they do it far better than the Chinese on the same street.

Kelbrook was probably the best chippy for a while but it closed for a while. Flaxmoss chippy in Helmshore is quite nice but they are all so hit and miss these days.

Kelbrook was the best for miles.

I've had fish & chips in most of the places mentioned on here, and just when you think you've found a good 'un, they let you down the next time you go. Too inconsistent.

Fish & chips for two isn't cheap these days, so I hate taking my chances in the hope that they are on form when I visit.

Not in East Lancs, however, Kay's in Cleveleys is always bob-on.

The lounge at Crowood. 2 for £20 chippy tea dine in on Friday. Fish is like a whale, mostly fish, not too much batter. Thrice fried chunky proper chips, piece of lemon, pots of mushy peas and tartare sauce. Excellent, never disappoints. Stiff you for the drinks mind.

The restuaraunt or takeaway? For me the takeaway started going downhill around the time they went on JustEat and had to start messing around with those orders as well.

Another shout out for Clayton Street chippy in Great Harwood.
Also West End chippy in Oswaldtwistle. I know this will be a little contentious but they serve the Blackburn delicacy the 'John Bull' which is a deep fried ball of spiced meat mixed with potato. Great with mushy peas.
