Have You Noticed

Post by Dinglejedi » Fri Sep 19, 2025 2:56 pm

It does not matter what program you now watch it seems the word super has become the word of the moment.
Super exciting, super hot, super intelligent you name it they now add it. On trend and sheep will follow.

Everything is super this and super that even politicians are using it as well as news readers, it makes my blood boil.

I had noticed and I'm glad it's not just me it irks.. :-)

Another American trend that has crept into every day use as the word 'very' is superseded by the word 'super' in the English language .

Don't get me started on "can I get" instead of "may I have"..

I have noticed how "on trend" it is to have such open ended questions as thread titles instead of the actual topic of the thread.

Actually, absolutely and essential have filled that role over the years. The use of a SUPERfluous word.

It's not as bad as Radio DJs etc saying that everything is "amazing" and "phenomenal"

Now that is super annoying

Started when everything become "so fun" rather than "so much fun".

People too lazy to say an extra, gramatically correct adjective nowadays.

Couple more here.

On TV instead of "yes" it's "100%"

And "you smashed it" for any task completed

Another American trend.
I'm not sure that it originates in the USA and it's only begun to irk me latterly:
The first place/area that I noticed it, was amongst cyclists who were being interviewed after the big cycle races; I cut them some slack on the basis that they were predominantly speaking English as a second language.
But as noted by the OP and yourself, it's now being adopted as the first choice adverb of degree by native English speakers too - the lad Tom Pidcock was 'super happy' at his third place in the Vuelta.

My current pet hate is people getting their tenses mixed up to try and make a future prediction sound like a fact. "Burnley win a point if he takes Les off before that second booking" instead of "I think Burnley would have won a point if he had taken Les off before that second booking".

It's everywhere. Infuriating.

Not noticed this but it is really annoying when people on radio try to put the word ‘algorithm’ into any line of conversation. It is like they are excited there is a new word they’ve not used before and copy everyone else using it. It’s desperate.

I noticed a good 12 months ago people in conversation were using the word super over and over again. Why do some people still use the word “so” at the start of a conversation when replying. As for Kat every time she opens her mouth she finishes the conversation with “yeah”.

Or Ally McCoist describing everything that happens in a game of football as "unbelievable".

McCoist was a breath of fresh air when he stated getting regular games, now he's just a bore who agrees with everything his co commentater says.
