Mid-table place for under-21s after cup week
Burnley have dropped a place in the Professional Development League and are now in sixth place although there was nothing we could do about that having been in cup rather than league action two days ago.
I think it is very much worth mentioning again that goals from Darko Churlinov and Will Hugill (pictured) gave us a 2-0 victory in the Central League Cup in that cup match, our first game in the competition this season.
Barnsley are the team who have moved ahead of us. They beat Fleetwood this week and that allowed them to leapfrog both Hull and ourselves with Hull having suffered a defeat against third place Birmingham. That win for Birmingham on Monday took them five points clear of third place Sheffield Wednesday for 24 hours, but Wednesday’s win at Coventry brought them back within two points.
Birmingham are now just five points behind leaders Sheffield United although the Blades, like us, were without a game and have two games in hand on their closest challengers.
At the bottom, Peterborough followed up their win against us with another point, this one against Crewe. They are now just two points behind next to bottom Coventry.
South group leaders Millwall were, like Sheffield United, without a game so a win for QPR at home against Ipswich would have seen them go top on goal difference. It ended in a draw so Millwall retain their two point advantage with QPR now having lost their game in hand.
In the last review, I referred to Bournemouth having scored just six times in seven games this season. That must have inspired them; they recorded a 4-0 victory against Bristol City and jumped ahead of them into third place.
We are back in league action this week and there is a full set of fixtures all being played on either Monday or Tuesday. We travel to North Ferriby to play Hull next Tuesday with kick off at 7 p.m.
