After the disappointment of Monday’s cup defeat at the hands of Peterborough United, our under-23s get the opportunity to extend the unbeaten league run to six games tonight with the home fixture against Middlesbrough.

We go into the game in seventh place in Premier League 2 Division 2 having won three and drawn two of the last five to bring about a recovery having lost the first three games. We are one of three teams on eleven points, sitting behind Nottingham Forest and Wolves on goal difference.

Our opponents Middlesbrough are currently tenth with two points fewer than ourselves having won three but lost five of their eight games. Having lost their opening two games they then went on to beat Southampton, Stoke and Sunderland but have since been beaten by Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and West Brom in their three most recent games, and ending that last game with ten men when Connor Malley, nephew of ex-Claret Phil Malley, was sent off.

In the corresponding game last season, we led 1-0 with a Lewis Richardson scored but fell behind to two Tyrone O’Neill goals before the end of the first half. We did go on to win the game 3-2 with a brace from Ryan Viggars who was playing on trial from Sheffield United. Viggars is  now with Charlton.

Tonight’s game is being played at the County Ground at Leyland and kicks off at 7 p.m.
