Tomorrow’s game against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium will be refereed by Jon Moss who becomes the first Select Group Official to get a second Burnley game this season having previously taken charge of our home game against Manchester United.

Since Bobby Madley’s indiscretions, the Select Group is down to 17 referees so, as it stands, we are going to see some referees at least three times this season but for Moss, this will now double the number of Burnley games he refereed last season; his only game then was our 1-0 win at Everton.

He was OK against United and it actually lifted his RATE THE REF rating to 59.26 but he’s still in 15th place, above only David Coote and Paul Tierney.

Tomorrow will see him referee for a tenth time this season. Of the nine games so far, six have been in the Premier League with two in the Championship and the FA Community Shield. There were no cards in that Community Shield game at Wembley but in the other eight games there have been 29 yellow and three red cards.

Of those yellows, sixteen have gone to home team players with thirteen to away team players. All three players he’s sent off have come in Premier League games. First to go was Southampton’s in a 2-1 home defeat against Leicester. He then sent off Marcus Rashford at Burnley while in his last game he dismissed Watford’s Christian Kabasele in their 4-0 home defeat against Bournemouth.

Overall we’ve not had good experiences with this referee. The three Burnley players he’s sent off have all, in my view, been poor decisions, none more than the ridiculous decision to show a red card to Michael Duff at West Ham in 2015. We can only hope for better tomorrow.

The assistant referees are Eddie Smart and Andy Halliday. The fourth official is Chris Kavanagh (Manchester) who refereed our last game against Huddersfield.
