Moss down south
In January 2017, Jon Moss was the controversial referee who awarded Arsenal a penalty against us at the Emirates that gave the Gunners a 2-1 victory against us.
Since that day, over five years ago, he’s refereed another fifteen Burnley games with only one of those played outside of the north west, and that at Leicester on a day when he was persuaded to rule out a perfectly good goal by the VAR official to deny us a point. Of the other fourteen, seven have been at home, four at Old Trafford, two at Goodison Park and one at the Etihad.
I think those games this season have improved him in RATE THE REF and he’s now seventeenth with a rating of 56.97 out of 100.
This season he’s refereed a total of 22 games with 17 of those in the Premier League and he’s fit for a 23rd having survived an irate Antonio Conte on the Turf Moor touchline this week. In those 22 games there have been 51 yellow and four red cards. Of the yellows, 20 have gone to home team players with 31 to away team players and it’s the away teams who have taken the hit with red cards.
The four players sent off have all been playing for the away team, Japhet Tanganga (spurs at Crystal Palace), Harry Maguire (Manchester United at Watford), Raúl Jiménez (Wolves at Manchester City) and Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace at Spurs).
His last game was last Saturday’s Arsenal v Brentford fixture that saw each team have one player yellow carded. They were Arsenal’s Gabriel and Pontus Jansson of Brentford.
There’s a new name to us on the touchline tomorrow. Fourth official is Josh Smith from Peterborough who is in just his third season as a Football League referee. Far more experienced is VAR official Andre Marriner who refereed our recent FA Cup tie against Huddersfield.
