We are playing Manchester United at Old Trafford tonight and it is no surprise to see that the game will be refereed Jon Moss. It would have actually been a much bigger surprise had he not been selected for this game,

Refereeing us against Manchester clubs has become a regular occurrence for him. This will be the fourth successive season that Moss has refereed this fixture and he’s also refereed one home game against them and two games against Manchester City in that time.

He refereed the second of the 2-2 draws at Old Trafford, awarding them a late penalty to get back into the game and was there again for the 2-0 win in January 2020 and last season’s 3-1 defeat.

Tonight will be his second Burnley game this season and, as things stand, he’s then only referee to have blown the final whistle on a Premier League victory in 2021/22 with that previous game being against Brentford at home.

Moss has refereed a total of fourteen games this season, with eleven of them in the Premier League alongside two League Cup ties and a Championship game. There have been 34 yellow and four red cards in those games.

Thirteen of those yellow cards have gone to home team players with 21 to away team players. All four of the reds have been away team players with three of them coming in his last four games. The early season red was Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga at Crystal Palace, and his most recent was Palace’s Wilfried Zaha in the return fixture. He’s also dismissed Harry Maguire in Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat at Watford and Raúl Jiménez as Wolves were beaten at Manchester City.

His two colleagues on the line and at Stockley Park tonight have both had poor performances highlighted very recently. Paul Tierney is the fourth official; he was referee for our last away game played at Newcastle. Darren England is on VAR duty and his most recent Burnley game was last season’s 4-0 win at Wolves.
