Joel Mumbongo scored twice in Burnley’s 3-1 win this afternoon against West Bromwich Albion in Premier League 2 but it was yesterday’s first team debutant Lewis Richardson who opened the scoring as the Clarets recorded successive victories at Curzon Ashton.

We were in the 19th minute when a poor pass out of his box by West Brom goalkeeper Ted Cann presented Richardson with an opportunity he wasn’t going to refuse, placing the ball back past the goalkeeper.

Two minutes later and Mumbongo was on the scoresheet, turning in a Max Thompson cross and for the remainder of the first half it was a case of whether we would add to our tally. We had to wait until nine minutes into the second half for that third goal and it was Mumbongo again who capitalised on a series of defensive errors to score.

Owen Windsor, West Brom’s leading goalscorer at this level in 2020/21, pulled one back for them but despite Marc Richter having to make one save and some pressure from the Baggies, there was never any likelihood of them getting back into the game and we ran out 3-1winners to move us up one place in the table.

The game did end on a sad note for us though with central defender Jake Rooney receiving a second yellow card three minutes into stoppage time, leaving us to play the game out with ten men.

The teams were;

Burnley: Marc Richter, Trialist, Richard Nartey, Jake Rooney, Anthony Glennon (Matty Rain 67), Max Thompson, Anthony Gomez Mancini, Josh Benson (Ben Woods 67), Ne-Jai Tucker, Lewis Richardson (Sam Unwin 67), Joel Mumbongo. Subs not used: Lewis Thomas, Trialist.

West Brom: Ted Cann, Ethan Ingram, Harry Williams, Saul Shotton, George Harmon, Taylor Gardner-Hickman (Nick Clayton-Phillips 58), Tomiwa Solanke (Zak Brown 76), Tim Iroegbunam, Rayhaan Tulloch (Tyrese Dyce 40), Finley Thorndike, Owen Windsor. Subs: Maksymilian Boruc, Thomas Sharpe.
