Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson has today extended his stay at Burnley with a new deal that will see him remain a Claret until the end of next season at the very least.

His contract was coming to an end at the close of this season but the new deal will take him to the end of the 2023/24 season with the option of a further year.

Signed from Charlton in the summer of 2016, he had three good seasons, the best of which was the 2017/18 season when he won the Up the Clarets Player of the Year award. Then,  injuries struck that saw him in and out of the team for the next three seasons.

Although he’s missed the last two games with a minor injury, he’s been back to his best form this season playing wide and in a more central position and Vincent Kompany has spoken a lot about his value to the squad.

Today’s news is very good news and JBG himself is happy to have signed this new deal. He said: “I’m really pleased. Obviously it’s a new journey with the club and it’s something I really want to be a part of. The season has gone fantastically well for the team and we’ve done really well, but we know there’s still a lot of work to be done.

“I love the club and it’s great news for me and my family to extend my stay for another year.”
