Burnley’s League Cup tie tonight at Millwall will be refereed by Andy Davies, and it will be a first Burnley game for the Select Group 2 official.

Davies, from Hampshire, actually started his football life as a player and played for Gillingham, Portsmouth and Yeovil before an injury forced him to retire at the age of 28.

Having started refereeing in 2004, he was promoted to the Football League in 2012 with his first game coming at Exeter in August of that year with the home side losing 3-0 against Morecambe. In November, in his first FA Cup tie, he got his red card out for the first time, dismissing Aden Flint, then with Swindon, in a 2-0 home defeat against Macclesfield.

He got his first Championship game in October 2013, a clash between Leicester and Bournemouth which Leicester won 2-1. Bournemouth’s Elliott Ward got a red card that day, an eighth for Davies.

When the Select Group 2 was created in 2016 he stepped up to the professional ranks and now referees predominantly in the Championship although none of his three games this season have been  at the highest level of the Football League.

He kicked off 2020/21 season with one yellow card in a Football League Trophy game involving Norwich under-21s. He’s since had one League One game and one in the League Cup in which there have been a further eight yellow cards with a red card in each. Four of the nine yellow cards have gone to home team players with five to away team players. It’s also been one home player and one away player sent off.

His fourth official tonight is also a newcomer to Burnley. He is now in his third season as an assistant referee in the Football League.
