Nick Pope was confirmed as the winner of the 2019/20 Player of the Year at Burnley FC Supporters Groups’ monthly meeting last night and will become the first recipient of an award now to be called The Beeky.

The big event of the year, the Player of the Year Evening, was cancelled in May because of COVID-19 but by then a decision had already been made to rename the main award, the Player of the Year. From this year it was to be called the Alan Beecroft Player of the Year.

Many Burnley fans knew Alan, many couldn’t avoid this larger than life character. I can’t begin to list all the things he did to help the club and other supporters, the list would be far too long. A pain in the backside at times, he really was the most generous of people. He was diagnosed with the worst possible strain of motor neurone disease in April 2018 and sadly passed away in January of this year.

He’s missed, no doubt about that both from his contribution to the supporters of our club and to the supporters clubs who he was involved with for so long, firstly Colne Clarets and more recently Burnley FC Supporters Groups.

Although the event had to be cancelled, having previously made the decision to rename this one award, we thought it was the right thing to do to make arrangements for this one award to be won and presented this year.

We will now be looking for a way to present the award. We have already had discussions with Burnley Football Club regarding a number of ways we could do this. It will take some time. Only last night did we agree on a design for what will be a specially commissioned trophy being made for us by Glasform at Kirkham.

I know Alan’s family are delighted with this and I’m sure all the friends he made over the years will be equally delighted. To give it its full title It will be the Alan Beecroft Player of the Year Award but will also be known as The Beeky as Alan himself was.
