Nield is our cup referee
Last Friday, Tom Nield was the fourth official when we beat West Brom 2-1; tomorrow he will be in the middle when we take on Ipswich Town at Portman Road in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Nield, from West Yorkshire, has had a difficult week as a referee having sent off the wrong player, Dion Charles, in Bolton’s 1-0 win against Forest Green, a decision that was rectified on appeal, but for someone whose day job is as a senior nurse within the Acute & Emergency Service, I’m sure he’ll have been under more pressure away from football.
This season he has refereed a total of 22 games. Seven of those have come in League One and a further seven in League Two. The others have come in various cup competitions and he’s already refereed two FA Cup ties, Peterborough v Salford in the first round and Wrexham’s win at Coventry in the third round.
In those 22 games, there have been 65 yellow and two red cards. Of those yellows, 31 have gone to home team players and 34 to away team players. The one player he’s sent off other than Charles is Coventry’s Jonathan Panzo in that FA Cup tie against Wrexham that they lost 4-3.
The fourth official tomorrow is Sunny Gill whose dad Jarnail Singh was a Football League referee. Jarnail last refereed a Burnley game at Plymouth in 2008. Sunny has not previously officiated at a Burnley game.
Unlike the third round game at Bournemouth, with tomorrow’s game not being played at a Premier League ground, VAR will not be in operation.
