Swansea boss Russell Martin said after Saturday’s game that he was surprised to see Steve Martin show Joel Piroe a red card after he appeared to stamp on Clarets’ midfielder Josh Cullen.

“I was really surprised the red card came out,” he said, adding: “The ref was very close, he’s a very good referee and he’s made that decision so we’ll have to take a look at it.” Martin confirmed: “He’s telling us he hasn’t meant to do anything, he’s just trying to get out of the boy’s way. We have to trust Joel on that because he’s such an honest and brilliant lad.”

It all pointed to Swansea considering an appeal but having taken a look at it, they’ve wisely opted not to and Piroe will now serve a three match ban, missing their next three games against Reading, Cardiff and Bristol City.
