Norwich confirm Barnes signing
Ashley Barnes recently visited Norwich City which seemed to place them at the head of the queue of clubs interested in signing him and today they’ve confirmed that he will be joining the Championship club in July on a two year deal.
Although he’ll be wearing yellow and green next season, he’ll still be wearing the number ten shirt that he made his own at Burnley and on confirming the move today, Barnes said: “I am delighted, over the moon that it’s finally done.”
Having spoken with their director of football Stuart Webber and head coach David Wagner, he added: “I think the ambition to get back into the Premier League was the main thing. The conversations I had were brilliant, they showed me how they wanted me to play and how they want me to fit in to the group and I’m happy to totally push us forward and try to get us promoted next season.”
Wagner said: “We’re delighted to welcome Ashley to the club. He is a player I have come across on a number of occasions and he knows exactly what it takes to be successful in this league. It was very clear from our conversations that he has a real hunger and desire to continue to perform at the highest level. It was a feeling that we both have, the determination to do whatever it takes to win football games.
“There was a lot of competition for his signature which says a lot about how he is respected and valued in the game. I’m very happy to have this deal completed early and we look forward to welcoming Ashley to the group when we return for pre-season.”
Barnes confirmed that he would be leaving Burnley on the Middlesbrough pitch following our promotion clinching win there on Good Friday. He’d scored that night, his fiftieth league goal for the Clarets, and he went on to add one more in his final appearance for Burnley against Cardiff.
I wrote an article entitled Aye Aye Thank You Ashley Barnes over the Easter weekend and wrote then that he should have no problem finding a new club.
It will strange seeing him play in Norwich’s colours next season but I’m sure every Burnley supporter will join me in wishing him well.
