Number 23 Lincoln City and that left Number 10
It was time for the FA Cup 3rd Round draw sixty years ago. The dramatic events were, as always, held in the FA Council Chamber with BBC Radio allowed in to cover the event as the 64 balls went into the blue velvet bag while workers and schoolboys huddle around radios listening for their team’s number to be drawn.
On this day the drama was extended for Burnley fans who waited and waited for our number 10 to be drawn, and they couldn’t have had longer to wait. We were last out with an away draw against Lincoln City with the game to be played on Saturday 9th January 1960.
Lincoln had been beaten 5-0 two days earlier at Scunthorpe in a Second Division fixture and they sat 18th in the table, three points behind Liverpool who had just, by the way, appointed Huddersfield manager Bill Shankly as their new manager to replace Phil Taylor.
Lincoln were managed by Bill Anderson. He’d been in charge since the league programme resumed at the end of World War II and he would remain manager there for a further five years. This would be the first FA Cup meeting between the clubs since the 1904/05 season when Lincoln won a Turf Moor replay 2-1 after a draw at Lincoln.
Our last league game against the Imps had been back in the 1933/34 season. On that occasion we won 3-1 at home but lost the return fixture at Lincoln by four goals to nil.
The draw was believed to give Burnley a reasonably bright chance of advancement into the fourth round with manager Harry Potts keen on having another good cup run having gone all the way to the 6th round in the previous season.
