Oliver gets first Burnley away game of the season
Michael Oliver will referee our game at Norwich tomorrow afternoon, just his second Burnley game of the season to follow the home draw against Leeds in August.
He’s not new to our away games though with the last occasion coming last season when we beat Crystal Palace 3-0 at Selhurst Park.
Tomorrow will be his 25th Burnley game and the 17th in the Premier League. He’s had his moments and four times he’s sent players off in those games, three of them being Chris Eagles, Michael Duff and Jeff Hendrick.
Once the youngest referee on the Select Group At 25, he’s now 37 and is established to the extent that he hasn’t refereed a game in the Football League for over four years.
This season he’s refereed a total of 37 games but 13 of those have either been internationals or European competition fixtures. In the 24 domestic games, he’s shown 74 yellow and five red cards. Of those yellows, 38 have gone to home team players and 36 to away team players.
The players to see red started with Leicester’s Ayoze Pérez last August in a 4-1 defeat at West Ham with Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka being sent off at Liverpool in the League Cup. Arsenal suffered again when he dismissed Gabriel Martinelli at Wolves in a 1-0 win and the most recent two have both been Everton players. First it was Jonjoe Kenny against Wolves in a 1-0 loss and in his last Premier League game he sent off Michael Keane as Everton went down 2-1 at West Ham. Keane went for two yellows with Aaron Cresswell (West Ham) and Everton pair Mason Holgate and Richarlison also receiving cards.
Fourth official tomorrow is Andy Madley whose last Burnley game was the 1-1 home draw against Leicester last season. John Brooks is on VAR duty; his only Burnley game was this season’s 0-0 draw at Wolves.
