In total, he refereed three Burnley games last season. The first of them was the horrible 5-1 home defeat against Everton. We couldn’t blame him for anything that went wrong that day but there was a wrong decision at Watford although that was down to his assistant Simon Bennett who wrongly flagged Chris Wood offside when he thought he’d scored a winner in stoppage time. Bennett was also on the line for Oliver in the Leicester game and will again be tomorrow at Brighton.

It’s a 17th Burnley game tomorrow for a referee who made it to the Premier League very quickly and he’s still in his mid-30s yet he can look back ten seasons to his first Premier League game.

He’d already refereed us six times, three of those against Blackpool, when he first took charge of a Burnley game in the top flight and that was our season opener against Chelsea in August 2014 when he upset the visiting manager by wrongly showing a yellow card for simulation against Diego Costa when it looked as though Tom Heaton had given away a penalty.

He’s had his moments with us but his concerning performances have come in his earlier games, none more so than the Swansea home game in 2009 and his handling of the Blackpool game in 2011 when Blackpool probably should have ended the game with eight or nine players.

Oliver has refereed three Premier League games this season in which there have been eight yellow cards of which three have gone to home team players and five to away team players. Five of those cards came in the most recent game between Aston Villa and Everton. He carded Villa pair Frederic Guilbert and Trezeguet along with Everton’s Seamus Coleman, Andre Gomes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Michael Oliver now stands sixth in RATE THE REF with a rating of 71.17 out of 100.
