Oliver is back at the Turf for more
Michael Oliver was the first to referee a game at Turf Moor in 2020 and he’s back before the end of January for tomorrow’s FA Cup 4th round tie against Norwich City.
That last visit was on New Year’s Day when we were beaten by Aston Villa and it added to what is not the best of records we have when refereed by Oliver. It was his 19th Burnley game but only six have been won and none since we beat Derby four years ago tomorrow. The record doesn’t look to good but it is slightly better than the one we’ve had with Jon Moss in the middle and look what happened two days ago.
In those twenty games there have 63 yellow cards and just the one red card which caused something of a stir three weeks ago. Of those yellow cards, 30 have gone to home team players with 33 to away team players.
The one red card came in the last round of the FA Cup in the game at Selhurst Park between Crystal Palace and Derby. The Championship club won 1-0 but it was Palace who had the player sent off. Luka Milivojevic was the player dismissed after Oliver decided to make use of the touchline monitor, something that hadn’t been used at all in the Premier League.
With this tie being played on a Premier League ground, VAR will be in use. Just six of the sixteen ties will be using VAR over the weekend and our man on duty in front of the screens is Paul Tierney whose one Burnley game this season was the 3-0 win at Watford when we were given a penalty via VAR. Kevin Friend, referee in our recent game at Chelsea, is the fourth official.
