On the road with Linington for a third time
James Linington from the Isle of Wight will referee our game tonight at Millwall and it will be his third Burnley game this season with all of them away from home.
He was in charge of our opening game at Huddersfield, where he had a good game, but not so good when he refereed our game at West Brom five weeks later. Those games, added to his five previous Burnley games, have taken him into eighth place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 62.38 out of a hundred.
A Select Group Two referee, all but three of his 24 games this season have been in the Championship with one in each of the cup competitions and one in League One. He’s shown exactly one hundred yellow cards in those games and four red cards.
Much more likely to card players from away teams, 37 of those yellows have gone to home team players and 63 to away team players. All four of the players he’s sent off have been playing for the away team. The first was Sunderland’s Dan Neill in a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield United and he then dismissed Cardiff’s Jack Simpson as they went down 3-0 at QPR.
Last month he sent off Middlesbrough’s Dael Fry, somewhat harshly, at Sunderland in a 2-0 defeat with the last of his reds coming last Wednesday in his most recent game between Stoke and Huddersfield. Stoke won the game 3-0 and had both Ben Pearson and Lewis Baker yellow carded. Huddersfield saw Matty Pearson, Jonathan Hogg and Jack Rudoni all carded along with Will Boyle who received his second yellow with the score still at 1-0.
The fourth official tonight is Chris Pollard. He referees in Leagues One and Two and has been on the national list since winning promotion in 2019.
