Newcastle United, Leeds United, Brentford and now West Ham United, four away games this season that have been or, in the case of West Ham, will be refereed by Wigan official Paul Tierney.

It’s a concern that we have lost all of the previous three and they’ve all been against teams who were, at the time, very much under a real threat of relegation. At least tomorrow, that’s not the case; West Ham are more interested with the top of the table.

He isn’t a referee who has ever had particularly good games refereeing us and we’ve won just twice in away games with him and both of those at Watford back in the 2017/18 and 2019/20 seasons.

This season he’s reached three figures in cards with 98 yellow and two reds in 26 games. Of the yellows, 51 have gone to home team players and 44 to away team players; the other three were in the Community Shield. The first of his red cards was shown to Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson when he had something of a nightmare of a game at Spurs, failing to send off the England captain. The other red card, as we know, was Nathan Collins at Brentford.

His most recent game was Crystal Palace’s 3-0 home win against Arsenal that saw Arsenal pair Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey yellow carded.

Graham Scott is fourth official tomorrow; his most recent Burnley game was the 1-0 home win against Spurs. Andre Marriner is on VAR duty and he was last with us in the middle when Chelsea won at the Turf.
