O’Neill signs for Standard Liège
We’ve become used to players arriving at Burnley from Belgian clubs but now comes news of a former Burnley player making the move to Belgium from his home country of Australia.
Aiden O’Neill, who made a Premier League debut for Burnley seven years ago in a 2-0 home win against Liverpool, has been back home in Australia for some time, initially at clubs on loan but since 2020 on a permanent deal with Melbourne City.
His form in the last few months has won him his first full cap for the Socceroos and has now won him a move back to Europe with Standard Liège where he has signed a four-year deal.
The ex-Claret said: “It’s going to be a very exciting step for me. I’m just absolutely buzzing to have it over the line and excited to get going. It’s a really exciting league, you know, lots of good players playing there, and also progressing their careers from there.
“You can see they are looking at Australian players now, and I think it’s a great sport to be in. I’m just incredibly excited to get started.”
