1819 burnley peter crouch 01 1000x500Back in the day, the summer of 2001 to be exact, I had an article ready to confirm the signing of striker Peter Crouch from Queens Park Rangers. It was one of those articles that never saw the light of day, written when a signing looked more than likely but failed to materialise.

I never expected then that I would be writing to confirm the signing of Crouch in January 2019. Yesterday morning I never envisaged this, but he has signed on a deal until the end of the season, a signing made just one day after his 38th birthday.

In that summer of 2001, Crouch moved to Portsmouth for a fee of around £1.5 million. He’s since played for Aston Villa, Norwich (loan), Southampton, Liverpool, Portsmouth again, Spurs where he started his career and finally Stoke where he’s been for the past seven and a half years.

He’s played almost 580 league games and scored over 140 goals. He played 42 times for England, scoring 22 goals.

His record stands up, but he’s 38 and can’t get into a Stoke team who are mid-table in the Championship. I thought there was nothing in it when I heard the news yesterday, today, with the signing confirmed, I’m absolutely baffled by it to be honest.
