Pawson has the season’s final whistle
Tomorrow’s home game against Newcastle United, our final game of the season, will be in the hands of Sheffield referee Craig Pawson.
It will be the fourth time he’s refereed us this season; he was in charge of both games against Watford and the home game against Manchester City. Those four will make it twenty Burnley games in total and it will be a fourteenth Premier League game of ours he’s refereed.
Used exclusively in the Premier League, he’s refereed 26 games in English football this season including cup competitions and in those games there have been 113, averaging almost four and a half per game, and two red cards. Of those yellows, 53 have gone to home team players and 59 to away team players. The two players he has sent off are Pascal Struijk in Leeds’ 3-0 home defeat against Liverpool and Allan for Everton when they beat Newcastle 1-0.
The home and away yellows don’t equal the total. That’s because there was one in his most recent game, the FA Cup final at Wembley when the one player to blot his copy book on the day was Chelsea’s Reece James.
Jeremy Simpson is the fourth official tomorrow with Jarred Gillett on VAR duty. Neither have refereed a Burnley game.
Simpson is a Select Group 2 official but Gillett is a member of the Select Group and has refereed nine Premier League games this season. Others to referee in the Premier League this season but not a Burnley game are Peter Bankes, Darren England, Tony Harrington, Andy Madley, Michael Salisbury and mercifully Rob Jones.
By the time tomorrow’s game has been played, our games this season will have been refereed by:
5: Paul Tierney
4: Craig Pawson
3: Martin Atkinson, David Coote, Mike Dean, Kevin Friend, Chris Kavanagh, Jon Moss
2: Andre Marriner, Michael Oliver, Graham Scott, Anthony Taylor
